I'm thinking of getting a crossbike.
It comes with 34/46 chainset and 12-27 10 speed cassette.
I want lower gears. Is there a 10 speed cassette with up to 34 t bottom sprocket?
Or, can I put 9 speed cassette on 10 speed freehub?
Would the STI's still work?

FWIW the only 10 speed MTB cassettes are SRAM - shortly to be launched, but you might be able to get a custom cassette with a 30 e.g. Marchisio (£££) but it will also need a long-cage rear mech too. 10 speed shifters/ mech won't index with a 9 speed cassette either.

    that sounds interesting Monty

as it stands, you could go 33t up front and 11-28 at the back, on 10 spd.
