Sorry for post hoaring today! this is my final stupid question before the missus drags me into the big house clean
The main question is going from 32t/16t singlespeed would a 36t/ 11t-32t on rear give me a hard enough gear to get some good flat out speed up without spinning out?
Or as already suggested would a 42T up front with a 11-32 on rear be better?
With singlespeed bolts would the 42t mount in the middle to give a better chainline.
Or do all the winners use 38t up front
Your thoughts please

I'd get the 42. Roadie bikes have larger chainwheels than this, and you are going to have smaller wheels, reducing the gearing further.
Mount in the middle.0 -
42:11-32 sounds really high, but actually I think SS is right. That puts your 32:16 equivalent nearly dead center in the cassette at 42:21 and 5 gears up and 3 gears down to give you more variety.
Still, 42:11 is bloody tall, you should get 40mph out of that before spinning out, I guess.
my choice would probaly be 36. then you have your 32:16 equivalent at 36:18 as your middle ratio, 4 up and 4 down for flexibility, plus you maintain better ground clearance than with 42, although I'm not completely sure what the difference is in cm. on my geared HT I run 22/36 and 11-32 and I can spin that out, but I don't often get the opportunity to off roadEverything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
Is about 37 mph to spin out at 120rpm with 44/11. Smaller road tyres will reduce this a little.
So fora nice 90rpm cadence, may suit flatter, down hill parts.0 -
Superb advice as always
How about a 40t? good mix between the two?
I've seen an azonic at a cracking price for £16
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=1932
it doesn't say which is the 94mm 5 bolt, i'm presuming CD is 94mm and ATB is 110mm?
if so its only £16
My Heckler struggles in its outer 42t when trying to get a granny gear, i presume its because the chain line is so angled. As i'm mounting this in the middle not on the outer edge I reckon this should have a better chainline even in granny gear?0 -
Yes, the middle mounting will be a lot better.0

I ride 42:14 on a 26" wheel on the road and don't spin out very often so 42 11 you should be ok.
but I also ride with a double and bash where my biggest ring is 32t. I do spin out but it's either on easy road/dirt tracks or so steep/technical that I'm reaching for the brakes. 36t should be fine provided you don't do lots of easy fast descents.0 -
For mountain biking, go for the 36t. It's lovely.0

Hey guys so I went for an Azonic 37t on offer at chain reaction in the end.
Perfect
did the manc to blackpool with that upfront and 11-32 on back.
Plenty of granny action and loads of downhill big stomping action 8)
Lovely.0
