Recently i converted from freewheel to a 'new religion' of cassettes. After re-assembling most of my bike, i started to put my 'new' ebay wheels on and suddenly my mind went off-line. All of the sudden I noticed that i cant bolt on the rear wheel. Seemed to me i needed a skewer, which i, naturaly, did not have. An the skewer from the front wheel was too short So the questions are...
1. Do all cassette based set-ups require skewers?
2. Any idea how long should the skewer be? I'm running a silent Shimano hub.
3. How much you would rate my stupidity in a scale of 10, for not checking out info first?

1) If they have a quick release axle, yes
2) A rear one ;-)
3) not too bad seen worse.
The new wheel does fit in your frame? What is the bike, and how old? Some older bikes had 130mm rear frame spacing, newer cassette wheels are 135mm0 -
RIght...but it makes no sense still. I will upload a pic of how it looks to make it cleare. But untill then, picture this. While on the opposite side to the freehub body, bolt doesn't stick out, on the freehub body side, the bolt is out significantly and skewer could not keep the wheel in place...What could it be? I'm desperate, been working on my bike for 3 months now and each time i'm one step away, something goes astray. Now this...Giant Yukon FX30

Aye, gonna need a pic!0

The axle looks too long for your frame, and looks to have been spaced incorrectly. Does it say anything on the hub?
Measure from the inside of one dropout to the inside of the other. What is it?0 -
I don't think i saw anything on the hub except stating it's a shimano silent hub...Of all the rotten luck...I'm starting to think on giving up...Giant Yukon FX30

What is the frame? I think you have an older frame with a narrower spacing.0

Sticker on it says 19'' and it's a year 2000 frameGiant Yukon FX30

And can i use nuts instead of skewers if i space out the axle evenly?Giant Yukon FX30
-
Without the model, can't really tell you.
Where did you get the wheel from? the axle looks all wrong, as if someone has put it back together missing a spacer.0 -
ebay...shamed to admit i got mesmerized by a cheap price, since i've been looking for a cheap wheel for ages. Now i end up suffering for being too hasty. So there is nothing that can be done?Giant Yukon FX30

Can you get me that measurement?0
-
Which one? Tell me in detail. I will be able to do it tomorrow, because it's pitch black and my bike is in uni grounds so i hardly can measure anything now.Giant Yukon FX30

Oh, and let's imagine the axle is too long and all. Can it be replaced and is it worth it?Giant Yukon FX30
-
Measure the above.
You may be able to get the correct length axle. Or it may simply be your frame is too narrow for a modern 8/9 speed hub.
How many gears did it have to start? 6 or 7?0 -
I deleted the message where i asked about it but i think he said 7Giant Yukon FX30
-
Very likely the frame will not accept 8 or 9 speed.0
-
I'm aiming for a 7 anyway, so don't mindGiant Yukon FX30
-
If the wheel does not fit, you could get a seven speed freehub body and axle. (if the frame is say 130mm)
Or stick to what you had!0 -
and what if i just change the axle to a shorter one? Possible? Reverting to an old one is impossible. It was utterly mashed and not worth the money to straighten.Giant Yukon FX30
-
The 8/9 speed freehub that is fitted (which I assume it is looking at it) are wider. With the axle correctly spaced, the wheel may not fit in the dropouts.
I think the wheel you have is incorrect for what you need, and has been assembled poorly to confuse matters even more.
ANyway, we are jumping to conclusions! Lets get that measurement.0 -
OK, first thing in the morning i get the measurement and posting it with shaking hands. Thanks for all the help already, you're keeping my spirit up and teaching a couple of dozen things as wellGiant Yukon FX30

I could be barking up the wrong tree ;-)
I'll get our other resident tech expert, Nick, to have a look too.0 -
Oh, by the way. Before i bought this wheel, my old wheel had a screw-on 7 speed freewheel, not a cassette. Does this mean i can just go back to screw-on block if all this goes astray? I mean spacing then the axe wouldn't be an issue because it will be held down by nuts.Giant Yukon FX30

An the measurements are... 12.4 cmGiant Yukon FX30
-
Very narrow - sounds like the old 126mm spacing. No way will that wheel ever fit.
Stick to screw on blocks.0 -
Got it. It's a shame, now i have a useless wheel...Thanks though, question sorted.Giant Yukon FX30
