Spare chain pins / parts for emergencies

Hi,

I have a SRAM 10 sp chain with a power link. I always take a chain tool on long rides, but don't have any spare parts which is a bit foolish. Would a spare power link be a good idea - i.e. can this be fitted at any breakage point on the chain? Or do I need spare pins / normal links?

Thanks

Carry a spare power link or the KMC one. Better because you can re-open it if you need to. This should be all you need as chains nearly always fail at the outer plate.

Honestly don't bother. If you break your chain when you're out on a ride then simply knock a link out and fix the chain back together with the opened pin. Replace with a proper powerlink or new pin when you get back.

You can not make a safe repair using the old pin on a 10sp chain. A joining link is far easier and safer. Also a permanent repair. Just remove the damaged link and fit the new one. Far less hastle.
