What does mountain biking mean to you ?

You can push the limits of your bravery, go for an all day marathon ride or just cruise to the pub with your mates. There's the thrill and nerves of a new trail where you don't know what's around the next bend and the pleasure of your favourite local section where you know every rock and root like the back of your hand. Oh and the beautiful places it can take you...
Best sport ever!

What a ripper topic that gerodiefreerider!
I'm an ex motorbike nut. Had quite a few motorbikes and accidents all the same. With due respect to motorbikers, IMHO they're nothing on mountain bikes. You don't 'earn' ride the same as with a MTB. Getting to your destination on the motorbike consisted of sitting in hot leathers and drinking, which was good, but just doesn't give the sense of achievement.
I'm lucky enough to live on a hill and the sense of elation when I'm returning home from a good hack out - Looking as far as the eye can see and thinking 'I've been there today' is like no other.
I even like bonking 5 miles from home - I know that I've used up all that I had
Opinion: MTB riders are more happier than Roadies. We have a little game - How many 'waves back' do you get from passing rider(s). The tally is always far greater from people on heavier bikes!!!0 -

Freedom, Exercise, Confidence building and the enjoyment of being able to tinker with the bike.
I'm very shy and have no self confidence. Not had a girlfriend for years, and not confident enough to go to the gym.
Bike means I can get fit, and enjoy myself in the process. Can also take in some wonderful scenery at the same time. Chatting to people I meet out and about also helps build my confidence.
So it's all good lolWhy has my sig been removed by the admins???0 -
Going slowly
Occasionally scaring myself witless
Getting muddy
Spending hours in the garage afterwards putting my bike right
Somehow enjoying all of the above!_______________________________

For me it's the feeling of escapism and independence. When I got my car I had the independence but I was stuffed in a metal cage. With a bike you can cycle away and forget all about your troubles, and the rest of the world. I love early morning rides along the beach, nothing better than sitting there on your bike watching the sunrise. *turn corny mode off*

Mountain biking for me is a way of getting out there and getting away from problems ... nothing helps me out of a stressful situation (exams etc) more then just getting out on the bike and pedalling some miles, the freedom of it all aswell, if you see a hill you climb, it nice bit of singletrack you ride it, a downhill section you nail it !
it started of as a hobby but i soon bit the bullet and its becoming an addiction0 -

I like to feel like I'm in a private battle with mother nature, in a friendly way of course. When she brings rain, I bring my Pearl Izumi, when she brings dirt and rock, I bring HIghrollers, and when I am fitter I plan long, new, strange and wonderful rides in which case It's her trail against my wits and experience. Everything I have learnt against everything new she can throw at me.
This battle I feel very relaxing and I can get out all of my stresses. The adrenaline rush of a technical trail helps, and the long winding road puts everything in perspective with the time to think. I liken my bike as my warrior buddy; on my side when often not everything is.
And I like to play with gadgets and shit.
But SPDs are not 'on your side', they are double agents ready to ditch you at any moment...0 -
a similar story to some others - knee injury coupled with a need to stay fit as I get older
Its also the feeling of being out in the countryside and filling the old lungs with fresh airCube Attempt 20110 -
Similar to most for me. Started mountain biking when I was about 12, before that I had a BMX, Chopper, Grifter but Mountain bikes where it. I used to ride about 20 miles a day after school through the woods and at the weekends I'd ride 40-50 mile rides easy. I also did my paper round on the thing and got to my friends/school on it etc.
I had a friend that did it kinda pro and was sponsored by Yeti, I was so jealous...he had 3 of them. That's what made me want to ride so much, maybe I'd be that good!
Anyhow, got to about 16 and discovered beer/cider and girls so biking went out of the window!
Got back into it about 8 years ago (at about 25) when I bought a Marin hard tail and still love it as much! It's the 'being there' and the 'scaring myself' and the exercise and the fun that I still feel.
It's as much fun as my band who have toured around Europe! Different but the same! Scary and fun at the same time!0
