Specialized is around 28lbs I beleive. But the thing to remember here is you do pay a certain amount for the brand. Boardman have made a big impression but they still need to gets some brand loyalty, hence the high spec and great price. Also the frame on the boardman is not technically as good as say the Specialized which used M4 alloy tubing. But the frame still cuts the mustard and its thin tubing probably sheds at least a pound in weight.
Im not sure how much abuse I would give a boardman frame to be honest, but then they have only made XC bikes so far. It would interesting to see if they made trail bikes too.
I was amazed at the spec of the boardman compared to my Scott which costs around the same price. Although Scott do use a lot of inhouse components, which are of great quality too.
I think you need to nail down how serious you are? Are you a XC er who wants fast times on the loops? Or a fun rider who wants a bit of everything? If its the latter I would go for the Specialized FSR as it does seem to be spec'd for trail and XC.0 -

£1600 for a Anthem X2. He was looking at 1k bikes as far as I know.0

It is a race xc bike really, and is quoted by Giant as 26lbs without pedals.0

I don't know what it is about Giant bikes. Personally don't like them, but thats totally irrational.
A friend has a XTC 3.5 and it weights a tone for a HT.0 -
his budget was up to £1500 IIRC
I've tested the X1 and loved it, and I'm not a racer, just a 42 year old who ain't a downhiller0 -
