Okay so I have been commuting for the last 4 months by bike and have read alot of cycling forums and the same two main reasons why people commute by bike keeps popping up

1. To save money

2. To save time

Now I live 3 miles from my work and my company lays on a free minibus service every half hour from practically at my doorstep to my work doorstep.

So I cycle for neither of those two reasons above. Infact I have spent about £500 these few months on my bike and accessories so I am spending way more than if I just got the bus.

My GF thinks am nuts as does my workmates. What do I tell them>?!?!?! :D:D

Tell them that you'll probably live longer than they will.

    My two top reasons are:

    1) Because it's fun
    2) To keep fit

I don't save any money by it, esp as I'm still paying off the cost of the bike and accessories - and the ride definitely takes longer than the drive. But so what? :D

    Why do you cycle?

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women

    Very true indeed!

This whole cycling bug has really hit me hard. 4 months ago, couldnt even tell you what a derailleur is. My "best" bike was a £80 Apollo bike from Halfords.

Fast forward 4 months and I am now about to spend up to £1000 on a road bike!! I think this is my own personal quarter life crisis!! Before you know it, I'll be fully decked in lycra with my leg hair shaved so I can get to work 1 minute quicker!

I save no money by cycling. and no time.

I do it for fun and for the exercise.

Tell your lovely lady that cycling is getting you in shape and improving your stamina  , you're only doing it for her.

As for your mates, tell them where to go!

It gets more difficult to explain when you start cycling 10 - 15 miles into work

I probably spend far too much on bike bits, but at least it's not burnt in petrol.....

I have to admit, I love seeing the look on peoples faces when they ask me how far I cycle and I reply "14 miles"

This is usually followed by: "In a day?"

    "Nope, each way."

You generally get to see howmany fillings they have and whether they floss at this point

I was 15st and 6ft when I started cycling in November.

I'm down to 13.5 stone now and 4ft 2

Sorry guys, I'm going stir crazy in work waiting for people to leave. I'm in my cycling gear, bike by the front door and chomping on the bit to get out there...hmm, the thunder has started - could be interesting...

Remember the bit in Corocodile Dundee where he says - "That's not a knife, this is a knife"?

Well, 6ft & 15st is not 'a belly'. We are the same height, but not the same weight ;)

Next time you are breezing up a hill in your highest gear just think how much more effort you'd need if you had a 4 stone bag strapped to your waist......

btw - how long does 14 miles take for a super experienced uber-fit, lycra clad, 15 stone cycling machine such as yourself?

Cool machine - like you I started commuting a few months ago but I wouldn't stop now having got through the winter and lost about a stone - I find a good workout on the bike wakes me up before I get in to work - I get there quicker than I would by car and I certainly wouldn't think of any other way of getting to work. Actually I don't like walking anywhere - it seems slow and clumsy compared to being on the bike

    *cough*

Well it takes ME between 50 and 55 mins as a rule. Go ask a super-fit lycra clad roadie type what it should take ;)

When I started - the first time took 1hr 20 mins. I kid you not.

Personal best unladen is 45 mins, laden is 50. I never saw above 20mph for a LONG time, now while not regular is not unusual... funny how you simply don't notice the change :)
