What is the purpose of these long valves?
Long valves are for the deeper than your average rims. Extensions are for the massively deep section carbon ones the better-off TT riders (and certain bike tarts) favour.

What are these 'Tarts' you speak of?

I'm more of a minimalist; commuting, I take a Leatherman tool, maybe a Cool Tool if it's in my bag.Riding for fun, not even that. I rely on my McGuyver-like skills...

Depends on the distance tbh, but usually a spare tube, sticky patches, tyre levers, small pump. Occasionally bring a small multi-tool and C02.
  • nothing commuting - ride too short, would just walk.
day rides - pump, tyre levers, 2xspare tubes, small multitool.
touring - as above + spoke key, adjustable spanner, cone spanners, better allen keys, chain tool, cable ties, puncture repair kit.
Took spare tyre to North West Scotland - was very pleased I did this when tyrewall wore through on GF/s bike while 10 miles from anywhere - probably 100 miles from a bike shop?

...all useful stuff, ta, and FYI, I currently carry:

Tube (recently found out how much lighter a narrow tube for my 28c tyres is than a fat tube!!! 8) )
    patches
    tyre levers x 3
stupidly heavy and probably wrong size alien keys
    horrid cheapy spanner thing
    lights/lock/etc

    No corkscrew, however...

Am about to buy a multi-tool so I can bin some of the above

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I'm probably switching out a CO2 cartridge for the smallest pump I can find, though.

I can recommend one of these, the Topeak Micro http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Topea ... 360036953/ you can splash out another tenner for the carbon version, but not sure that the weight saving justifies the extra cost.

I went for a Lezyne Pressure Drive, I've only tested that it'll get some form of air in a tube so far, but I'm fairly pleased with it.

Well, I ended up using it today after a complete failure to use a CO2 inflator.
I have to say I'm pretty impressed, rideable pressure in about a minute.
So impressed, in fact, that I might ditch the CO2 inflator completely.

    Always on the bike:

    Pump
    Spare tube
    P* repair kit
Cable ties (dunno why, I'm sure they'll come in useful one day tho)
Thin latex gloves (for unshipped chain)
    Tyre boot
Multi-tool (allen keys, screwdrivers, chain tool, spoke key, tyre levers)
Another mini-multi-tool (pliers & variety of knives - getting shards out of tyres and the like)
    Two powerlinks
NBT freewheel remover (need to learn to use it!)

On tour - all that plus some of the below (longer = more stuff taken):

Inhalers & eye-drops (lost a contact lens 20 miles from home cos of dry eyes a few weeks ago  )
    Cash and bank card
    Mobile phone
    6" adjustable wrench
Duct tape (see cable ties for explanation)
    Spare cables

Could do with more on some of my longer days out, sometimes I think I'd be well-stuck if something broke 20 miles from anywhere, but then I think I could get paranoid and need a trailer for all the just-in-cases.

    Surly Jethro Tule
    Inner tube
    Pump
    Self adhesive puncture patches
    Multitool
    Tyre levers
    KFC hand wipes

That's more than I thought now it's listed out. I always think of myself as travelling light, but I guess not.
