Hi All,
Has anyone worked out an incident to milage ratio ?
So far this month I've commuted to work and back 713miles, I cycle four days a week, and had 5 incidents;
one car knocking me off
two people walking into me *
two vans knocking into me with their wing mirrors.
So from that I should have an incident every 142 odd miles which is not so good.
Has it just been a bad month, because before that I'd not been knocked off or and anyone walked into me for a few years......
So how about everyone else.......
* one happen today and I knocked him flying, he was only 8 or 9 and ran out from behind a bus. I was very shocked, as was he.

If we counting actuall off then it's 1 in about 12000 miles of commuting. As for close shaves etc it's probably about 1 a week so about 1 every 200-250 miles.pain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................

Nothing this year - nothing of note anyway.
I guess, if your incidents are high you have to take into account, business of your commute and possibly ask a few questions of yourself and your own abilities.
Ultimately, I see numptyness everyday - but avoid most of it. Like this morning with the silly b!tch that dropped of a pavement onto the road, right on top of me.....I could see she was gonna do it and made a quick avoidance tactic....anticipation baby!0 -
This is tempting fate (something I don't really want to do while commuting sans helmet) but I have only had one off during my commuting, last June when a woman at a crossing (traffic lights were green) steps out, looks at me coming towards her, steps back on the kerb - and then steps out again. Bang (though more a glancing blow - she wasn't knocked over or hurt). And even then I bashed the railings a couple of times (still have the scars) but miraculously managed to leap off the bike and land on my feet before it went over.
I have had other offs but they've been during leisure rides. The last serious one was in 1994.0 -
Funny this should come up today, because I had my first ever prang yesterday - managed to ride into the back of a car, busting its light! Totally my fault, but fortunately neither me nor my bike have a scratch on us though as I didn't actually hit the deck. Before that I must have done at least 10000 miles without coming close to an incident/accident. If I'd had 5 in less than 1000 miles, I seriously think I'd pack in the commuting lark.0

Blondie - how're you coping sans helmet? Have you become a gibbering, fear crippled wreck yet, or are you secretly enjoying your new found daily flirtations with DEATH?
God knows what my miles to incident ratio is, but it's excellent. Near misses and things get a tad closer.- 2023 Vielo V+1

Out of interest, were you stung for the repair bills? 3rd party insurance is one of the reasons that I recently joined the CTC.0 -
I dunno, might be jumping to conclusions here N5Gooner but are you wearing an Arsenal football shirt when you're out riding? That might explain the high number of "accidents."0

I don't know what'll come of it yet; I gave the woman my phone number but I haven't heard anything. I could easily get a rear light cluster from a breakers and fit it myself, but I'm a bit worried that she'll get a new one at four times the price, get a garage to fit it, and then send me the bill!0 -

That's what I'd do, and that's what her insurance company would make her do! You might be some clueless shyster trying to save a few bob who doesn't know what he's doing. And would you leave your car with a stranger who you only know from his carelessness?0 -
Incidents must be pretty low - I don;t think I've had an actual incident for about 4/5 years - when I got car doored in Mile End.
Actually I had a few at that time - the car door, getting my front wheel jamemd in a tram line, and riding straight into a sign post (for no apparent reason :? ) which left me with a dead arm for nearly a year.
Near hits though - well everything feels like a near hit - I reckon I have a couple every week.
Testament to my skills I reckon that so few turn into actual incidents.
If only I could get that temper under control though.0 -
no Incidents to date, very close passes etc are once in a blue moon.
admitly until a few years ago i'd of not considered riding a bike on the road, nor to get around as not that sort of area, i ride the bike much like the car, a lot is probably predicting dumb moves.0
