I'm last man down at Fort Bill riding for the Naveed Syndicate. Have a quick chat with Martin Whitely (team manager) about tactics and we agree on signal codes if I'm down at the split.
I arrive at the start gate and get my Trek Session into gear. The horn blows and I'm off cranking out of the saddle, thinking about what I have to do for each section of the course.
After railing the first few berms and keeping my speed on the steep staircase I fly into the short rockgarden at speed, the bike pinballs a bit, but with Sam Hill precision I guide the front wheel through the gnarl and emerge into the narrow descents up at the split by -1.05 seconds.
Martin is taking a dump; this is the sign I was looking for as it means that I need to keep things smooth on the last section as the bottom part of the course is my strongest section.
I get some respite from the man made boulders when I enter the woods and the blanket of darkness gives me the perfect environment to collect my thoughts for the last section of the course.
I'm coming up to the jump and feel the urge to do a CG style whip to seduce the adoring crowd. Instead I power through the jump (whips mean you had a bad run) and then huck the super steep section Matti Leikonen style.
Coming up to the finish I triple the last gap and blast through the finish doing a Minnar style stoppie.
I slowly take off my helmet only to be confronted by a tall blonde smiling legend: Peaty.
Sheffield Steel shakes my hand and says well done, we embrace.
At drinks later that night I'm the king of the world, Jill Kintner takes me back to her sprint truck and shows me her Cobalts.
All in all, a great day.
