Not sure if this post is in the right place or if it should be in technical but gotta start somewhere.

I have a GT Avalanche 3 from 2005 and want to change the drive train as it is pretty much knackered.

I know I need some tools to get the cassette off and that I can understand but I don't get the crank and chain rings.

I can't get the crank off as I need a tool to do so but am not sure which one, any advice based on details below.

However, I also don't know if I will need a new crank and rings or if I can just replace the rings. The rings are rivetted together and connected to the guard with a couple of screws. Can't say more until I get the thing off I guess.

Overall I need, chain, cassette and crank / rings. Any suggestions, don't want to spend loads but will take any advice going.

I know I could take it down the shops but I am keen to learn how it works and want something to do this weekend!

The original spec is http://velospec.ru/bikes/gt/avalanche30-2005 and the crank is http://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/SID=si7252ed96a184a9a5e6bd72da9cd2eb/index.php?screen=sh.detail&tnid=819

You will need a crank extractor, and if is a hollow axle - which it doesn't say (ie for ISIS and octalink) - an adaptor.

If need a new bottom bracket, then a bottom bracket tool. You probably will need a new one if change the crankset, and as the rings are riveted on, you can't just change the rings.

Have a look at Alivio 8 speed cassettes and cranksets and 8 speed SRAM chains.
