It's going to need disc brakes to stop it assuming it ever gets going. Still weekly shop shouldn't be a problem, or getting stuff home from Ikea for that matter.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

We just tried out a 2.5 metre long Dutch cargo bike (bakfiets) at work yesterday, looked really scary but
rode really well. Could imagine going to tesco for the weekly shopping in it. Apparently very popular for the school run in Holland.

Brighton? Count yourself lucky. I know of a woman in Snowdownia, who tows her 3 kids behind her in one of those BOB trailers, up on of the steepest and longest hills in the area.
    every day!

(well, she used to, I presume the kids are all a bit older now and can ride by themselves)
