Its now been 3 consequtive rides on the trot where cars or in yesterdays case HGV have just got impaitent and starting beeping. Yesterday me and my mate were going through poole-in-wharfedale (in single file not side by side) and the HGV starting beeping behind, when I had the temerity to querstion what he would like use to do he blasted past us very near horning it all the way, its not like we were going slow we were at 25mph !!!

its is just me or has it got worse in the last 12 months ?

every ride I do now I seem get some abuse

BTW if you see a Haulage company from Hawes reg NY03 TKH steer well clear !

No, it just happens in batches, like 3 buses all coming at once. Look on the bright side, it'll be ages before it happens again.

The road through Pool towards Harewood does seem to attract lorry drivers with an attitude problem though...

    Its certainly not getting better!

  • Yes, I’ve been thinking it has been getting worse. I haven’t changed my style of riding – I always was on the “assertive” side. Lately it’s taxi drivers that shout undecipherable things out the window, :? then roll into ASLs, do U turns etc. :( like Northernneil I am usually not hanging about. Generally I find HGVs OK, Lothian Buses good, First buses driven by crazies, and young girls smoking and texting particularly scary.

On the other hand I am no angel. I regularly ride across a canal bridge with a “Cyclist dismount” sign  and think “w@nk*r” about the cyclists who say “there is sign back there”, or shout “dismount” as I competently cross without causing anyone any hassle.

Then again I was sorely tempted to blast my air zound  in the ear of the girls cycling at 4mph along the meadows last night wobbling and talking into her phone. I’ve also started to criticise other cyclists for drifting out of line, and cycling on the “wrong” side on cycle paths. Perhaps the rule should be “do what you like on cycle paths”.

Maybe everything I do is Ok and the errors of other should be pointed out forcibly :?:

I think its getting worse - not the impatience but the cretins who lean at the window to try to surprise you. Presumably you coming off would be a result. The other day some moron reached out his car window and grabbed my arm.

About a week ago some k**b in a camper van, came so close to me that I could used his on board loo.
Wagons don't tend to give me to much problems, 1 followed me for about 2 miles the other day without beeping or reving his engine & the only spot I could pull over he turned off down anyway.
On the other side, I stopped @ the side of a country lane last night & let this lass go passed on her horse. It had nothing to do with the fact she was very cute.

Got beeped by a driving instructor yesterday. Should I be honoured?

Overall I get less abuse, but then I've started avoiding rush hour or at least, congested roads during rush hour, and stick to smaller roads. I also stopped riding like a psychopath 3 years ago, which probably helps.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Report them to the DSA, they should know better, if they had a pupil in the car it's teaching them bad driving habits from the start.

Just stay in the centre of the lane and remain calm. If they get a chance to overtake safely, move to the left slightly as they do it, just in case they go in for the kill!

I recently had a bus driver on steroids behind me giving me some serious horn beeping so I just slowly grinded to a halt, right in front of him, blocking his way. Got my phone out, took a photo of him and the reg. number of the bus and continued on. For some reason, he was very nice after that! 8)

Yes it has got worse, so my answer, move to the centre-right of the lane to prevent overtaking and go as slowly as possible if beeping for no reason, they soon learn, otherwise they end up sitting behind me. Its not even as if I go slowly I'm usually doing about 22-23mph.

I have seen more of this as well. My last evening ride (25 miles) it happened twice. Once before I could even get out of my home town. I know it wasn't my riding, so I assume it's just anti-cycling idiots.

It's not going to be long before we read in the paper about some cyclist beating a car driver to death.

I went out last night, had no problems, even had two very curtious wagon drivers stay behind until they could get past giving me plenty of room.
