New Shoes and Pedals?

Im currently using SPD pedals and MTB shoes for road riding.

Im getting some cash for my birthday and was thinking about changing to Road shoes and peddles. Im looking at top end Spec Road Shoes and poss Shimano 105 pedals.

I like the idea of having a larger pedal area to push against, as I find sometimes with the SPD's that I get numbness in the ball of my foot, possibly due to the smaller pedal area, not a major problem but something I could do without.

Im really interested in more efficient peddling.

Im using Specialised Carbon soled MTB shoes, which in my view are very good but would welcome views of others who have tried both.

Worth the outlay or a waste of money?

Definitely not a waste of money, but the gap from not being clipped in to being clipped in at all is a lot bigger. You're probably not going to see any performance gains. You might gain in the comfort area from the bigger surface area, as you say.
They are a little trickier to clip in too, so not really ideal for a stop-start city commute.

If you're looking for performance gains, maybe an upgrade on your wheels would give more back.

That said, you're not going to be wasting your money with the road pedals, and I had absolutely no hesitation in putting Keo's on my bike, never even considered SPD's, despite them being on the borrowed bike I had been using.

Thanks for the advice. I have been pondering over this for a while.

My current mtb specific shoes have seen better days so before replacing these I need to make my mind up.

As far as I can see I have nothing to lose.

    Cheers

I have both, SPD's and mountian bike shoes on my commuter, and SPD SL's with carbon soled road shoes on my weekend/race bike.

I've noticed very little difference between the two. Ok the road shoes & pedals may have marginally better power transfer but I find them a nightmare in traffic, especially trying to get clipped-in in a hurry at traffic lights etc If this is just for commuting I'd definately go for a double sided pedal.
