hi, im trying to remove my raceface deus x chainset (got play in a shock bush and need to remove chainset to remove the shock).
i've undone the 8mm bolt on the drive side arm, but am having trouble removing the drive side chainrings/crankarm. is it just a case of using a mallet to help it on its way or have i missed something out?
been on park tools but only really goes into detail on the installation side of things, same with the silverfish site.
any help greatly appreciated

then put the ring that you took off with a 10mm allen key back in and then undo the 8mm bolt.
Or get an ISIS crank extractor."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

thanks for the quick reply nick, the only thing i've taken off is an 8mm bolt from the driveside. i can't see anything that would take a 10mm allen key...
cheers

Having asked the same question - and got the same answers about two weeks ago , here is the solution ....
For some perverse reason RaceFace using a effing stupid crank extractor size - it is 27mm (I think) rather than the std 20mm
To save yourself a huge amount of aggro in finding the right Park tool ( there is one) the way to do it is:-
Undo retaining 8mm bolt
Turn bike upside down.
Get a soft nosed peening hammer or similar
Tap (hard) in rotation each of the inner chaining ring retaining bolts .... keep on going around in a circle (or in fact, just rotating the crank)
You will then the see the BB begins to move along the splines
Keep on doing until it slides off easily - takes about 2 minutes (unlike the hours spent trying to source the right tool)
It work for me (06 Evolve XC) and if it damages the bearings I will be amazed. If it causes premature wear on the crank, so be it. I would rather then fit something that isn't so user unfriendly to use
The chain rings were crap and made from canadian cheese, I guess the crank set will be of similar quality - it's a self serving design :evil:Cotic Soul

nice one phantom pieman! been a right pain in the arse and took me a couple of hours to get the extractor (bought extractor used as told, no joy. had to go back to lbs for a push pad  fortunatly for me they had a spare and let me have it. phew! ). thanks for the tips mate much appreciated, much prefer shimano cranks......ballache!if it ain't rainin.....it ain't trainin
