Hello all, Ive got a cracking metallic sound coming from my crank when aplying heavy pedal force on the left pedal, ive replaced the pedals and no change.

I thought it was bearing but crank arms have no play in them at all?

Any idea welcomed please
:)

Sorry the bike is a Specialized Tricross Single.

Sure its the crank? I've got a knocking sound on my bike that is intermittant and after changing the BB, chain, freewheel and axle & cones it turns out to be the hub which means a new wheel or hub off ebay or similar.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Are both cranks on tight. You may not feel any movement but they can move under pressure.
How old is the BB. The one fitted may not be the best quality but should at least last until the warranty runs out.

I had a knock on my Tricross single that sounded like it was coming from the BB area, but it was actually the headset.

Bloody hard to work out where noises are coming from when riding fixed.....
    More problems but still living....

I had a similar sounding noise that I thought was coming from the BB, turned out to be the seat post. I guess there was just enough flex in the frame under heavy load to cause a tiny movement and noise. I removed the seat post, cleaned it, bit of grease and no more noise when it was replaced. As has been said, it is very difficult to find the source of annoying noises.

That depends on whether it's a cartridge type bottom bracket or standard axle.

If it's a cartridge BB then you can't grease the bearings, you just have to buy a new one. If it's a standard axle then you just need the right tools.

Most bikes these days come with non-serviceable bottom brackets.

You'll need a new BB from your nearest Specialised dealer or anywhere else that can oblige with a 103mm BB. I've got a spare if you shpuld want it.

I had the same problem. Do a search on ebay for Tange or Sugino bottom bracket and you will find them. Tange is cheaper and is what I bought for my Tricross. Been using for 3 months so far with no problems.

Thanks did you have the same creaking noise coming from that area when applying force?

I did wonder if it could be the cranks?

No I did not have that problem. As others have said trying to find the source of a creak can be difficult. The only way the crank can creak is where it is fitted to the bottom bracket spindle. Have you taken off the crank and cleaned everything and refitted tight to the spindle. If not try that and also check the bottom bracket is tight in the frame.

I had this problem on my last road bike, ended up pulling it to bits and rebuilding the hole thing cleaning and greasing as i went . Actually had a nice day in the garage as it was raining . Bit of music on the radio , plenty of mugs of tea and bike bits everywhere , lovely . Try it , you may solve the creaks for good , i did .

This happened to me once, swore I had a cracked frame, remove the crank arms grease the spindles and reseat, make sure it's tight.
No matter where you are, that's where you've been
