I won some vouchers for Evans Cycles in a comp at work ... so it's time to get back in the saddle 8)

I'm a big and fairly powerful rider (6"4 & 17st) and although I feel the lure of FS, my riding style ... and budget ... is more suited to hardtail. Bike riding should be fun (so not pure xc) plus I enjoy standing up and having a good mash at the pedals.

Previous ride = '98 Stumpy, full XT ... got nicked at uni  Not riden since.

Budget ceiling of a grand.

Narrowed my selection down to two alternatives Rockhopper Expert £879 vs Trek 6700 £999

Which offers best VFM?
Is the Trek worth the extra?
How would you tweek the shop spec?
What improvements have there been 08 >> 09?

Was initially put off by the Trek's colour scheme but now find the white quite seductive. Conversely, completely ruled out the "champagne" RH Pro. If i'm spending a grand, then I want my ride to look right :P

Will upgrade pedals to V12's or equiv (Wellgo?)
Possibly shorter FR / DH stem?
Handlebar grips for pimping
Saddle? Guess will have to ride and see. Charge Spoon comes well recommended

And of course, you can always try to persuade me to get a Kona / GF etc

I would say the spesh but i am biased i do like trek bikes and was interested in 6700 too but i don't think it is worth the extra 120quid but some may disagree with me, i dont know how all the bontrager gear compares to all the specialized own make stuff on the expert but i do know the slx shifters on the trek are above the deore fitted on the spesh and the xt rear mech on the spesh is above the slx fitted on the trek so its swings and roundabouts, both are good bikes and i am really happy with mine.

    Cheers guys ...

Didn't mention, but there's the possibility of a friend of a friend arranging "mate's rates"

Fingers, toes and eyes ... all crossed :P

Any thoughts on upgrading the standard spec?

    No Cube @ Evans

    However ...

GT Zaskar Elite £978 also in the running despite compromises to spec

Kona Hoss £879 - Heavy (ier) duty option

Couple of Scotts in the price bracket but I've always felt they're more race orientated?

It is a nice looking machine :P

But how much white is too much white?

Will be replacing the grips with white lock ons ... and potentially the stem for a shorter FR / DH.

Should I stick with black? Or go for white ... perhaps with red / white spacers to make it extra pimp 8)
