    that is exactly the problem

I'm a fairly big unit , 6.2 and 14 stone, and the walk back down did nothing for the knee (which I have had ligament problems with in the past) and ankles.

Calfs were pretty sore as I don't seem to use them as much when cycling, Its all about the quads!

Is it safe to cycle on a road with a 50 mile an hour limit?

Safe - Yes, though the consequences of driver error are probably going to be a lot worse than a 30 zone. That said, you could be cleaned up anywhere, on bike, on foot, in a car.

Is it pleasant? Probably not, but depends on width, volume of traffic etc. Are there no side routes that run parallel?

not sure to be honest but I would think that traffic would not be too bad (altho this is purely a guess) as the route runs parallel to the m62 so I would imagine that most people would be taking that route to get from warrington to liverpool.

The first / last part of my commute (depending on direction) is on NSL roads, The commute road speed goes 30, 40, 60, 40, 30, 40, 60... bridleway

I never really have a problem with the higher traffikc speeds. In fact the cars (generally) give me loads of room... lorries tend to terrify oncoming traffic rather than get close to me

High speed is generally fine so long as the road is either wide or has low traffic levels. This means that cars have no [percieved] reason to drive close to you.
