What's the best way to get from the City to Clapham?

I've been told a route of London Bridge -> Borough High St -> Elephant/Castle -> A3 which looks straightforward, but I'm a bit "afraid" of the Elephant & Castle and A3 sections...

You get onto the Embankment, take that to Vauxhall then get on South Lambeth rd to Stockwell then Clapham road. That'd be my route, Embankment is a good road and used by loads of cyclists. Vaux can be a bit dodgy but if you don't want to be on the road there are cyclepaths around the junction.

Elephant & Castle is a part of the journey where you need to keep your wits about you - that I will agree.

From there to Clapham is OK, even though a little bit of colour blindness is endemic.

Hundreds of us take this route every day.

I prefer to use Southwark Bridge, but it depends which part of the city you're at.

    All good nothing too bad.

That is pretty much my commute. E&C is OK, just keep your eyes open. But the route has a few turns, so reasonable chance of getting lost.

What time are you leaving? I'd be happy to show you the way - I'll be leaving Fenchurch St station at around 6ish.

Alternatively, the Embankment route is much easier to navigate; significantly smaller chance of getting lost.

Go along to Parliament Sq, follow Millbank, pass Morpeth and basically keep going until Chelsea (edit) Bridge. Then, left onto Chelsea Bridge (I think), and just follow the Road until you hit Clapham.

This is certainly the more entertaining route.

    Over london bridge

Right filter just past borough station and follow the signs for waterloo... Nicely cuts out the elephant and castle part of the ride.

From there straight on to Vauxhall, turn left onto the south lambeth road and then pick up clapham road at stockwell.

Bishopsgate leads to London Bridge it makes it and easy choice.

Il Principe comments about the Embankment I would agree with its a better cycle but a bit more of a convoluted route.

Straight down the A3 is my daily commute. Virtually impossible to get lost as it is all just straight. E&C is a bit hairy but not too bad really.
Worst bit is between the two roundabouts whilst heading South, flipping bus carnage on that 4 lane bit.
