pedal arm keeps coming off!

If someone else has had this problem can the point me in the direction of a permanent fix?
The arm that holds the pedal on the left side (non chain ring side) keeps working loose as the nut holding it works loose. I've given it a good tightening a couple of times but it eventually works loose.
Should I use thread lock, a spring washer or one of those star washer thingies that grips each side? or something else?
All help gratefully received. i've had to add a ratchet and 14mm socket to my take out tool kit in case it occurs when on a ride!
Cheers

if it is a Square taper interface it will now be too damaged.
replace the cranks."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I've got the same problem.
I just carry around a Allen Key of the correct size and tighten the nut whenever I remember.

I had that. When it comes off and you look at the part that should be holding on to the BB, if its square taper then look out for a rounding off of the crankset or any wrong looking bits of metal. I had this problem. You will need new cranks"Pain is temporary, success is permanent"0

I hear ya!! I don't really want to start spending money on the bike either if I don't have to. Not that i'm tight it's just thats money I can put towards a decent new bike if thats the route I want to go down if I get seriously back into biking.
There doesn't seem to be any rounding off on the crank or the square spindle it attaches to. I'll try some thread lock on the bolt and see how I get on I think. It just seems that the bolt comes loose. perhaps it's just poor machining in the first place.
i've put a 3/8 t bar and 14mm socket in the bike tool kit to deal with mid ride emergencies!
