Normal after only 3 weeks? (Paint Query)

Afternoon ladies & gents, a quick question if I may....

What do you make of this? The bike was purchased on 29/05/09 (i.e 3 weeks old today)....Should this have happened after such a short period of time or is this a common place for the paint to flake off? I assume it'll only get worse over time?

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated, let me know if you need any more info :)

Thanks

Totally normal mate. It's only where the other side of your QR skewer bolt has scratched and deformed the dropout slightly.

Becuase of the indentations, it means it's gripping more securely. It will get worse over time, and there is nothing you can do to stop it, short of not taking your wheel off, ever. However, it's only gonna scratch the paint off, where the 'nut' has contacgt with the frame!!

So stop being a fanny bag!!:wink:

PS, it's an aluminium frame, so corrosion is a non-issue 8)

When the bike has plenty of stone chips on the down tube, chain suck gouges on the chainstay and a scratch on the top tube from where you lent it against a wall you wont even notice that little tiny chip.

But I want it to stay dent & scratch free for ever and ever :o

 Thanks all, just wanted to check it was a general wear and tear paintwork flake rather than an overall problem with the paint on the bike....

    Thanks :D

Id say thats normal for a few month or even year or so old bike and in which case youre possibly overtightening the skewer, its only supposed to be gently tight if that makes sense, i.e. tight enough so there wont be any movement of the wheel in the dropouts unless you crash of cousre, but not so tight as you need both hands to close the skewers lever!

it's normal... Wouldn't happen as fast if modern bikes didn't have terrible paint, mind. (or if the manufacturers masked the quick release face) but don't worry about it.

Yeah the only thing that would of caused that is excess paint at the qr/frame interface hence it's chipped more off than the rest of the dropout.

Touch it up if you want (just the chip, leave the knurl marks), but tbh it's going to get worse anyway.

Spot of touch up would cure it. And, yes it is normal.

I have to be honest if that was my bike id be pretty dissapointed with the way the paint has came off on the corner - the indentations i wouldnt mind but i definately wouldnt be happy with the way the paint has flaked. I would take it back and complain. Mate your bike is only 3weeks old and in my opinion the paint should not be coming off like that. Take it back to the shop after all what have you to lose ?

So why should it be acceptable that paint has flaked off the frame after only 3 weeks ? Would you be happy if you bought a new car and the same had happened after 3 weeks or even a motorbike ? I had a bike for over 10years and the wheels must have been of hundreds of times but the paint never flaked like that and it cost a damn sight less than the Boardman Pro !

Jmillen - take it back to the shop, of course put your point across in a nice calm way and see if they will do anything for you. Ive got a Boardman Team and after only a week i noticed what looked like either a bad weld or a crack - i took it back to halfords, they spoke to the manufacturers and they changed the frame. I posted pictures of the weld on here and i was told it by people who viewed them it wasnt a crack - after all mate what you get on here is advice and its up to you what you choose to do with that advice.

You have a 3week old £1000 bike with flaking paint................

Its not acceptable. However i wouldnt know if you did it yourself or it was due to the wheel nut. Depending on the manufacotor they may put it down to wear and tare.
I would take it in and ask, but expect your LBS to be uncertain

Fair point but point but he will never know if he doesnt at least try - it will be interesting to find out what happens if he does speak to the shop about it.

  • its acceptable. it happens.

Unless you are very very very very very very (get the idea) careful, you'd never stop it happening.

Ok, if the bike has took a good old knock then yes i would expect the paint to come off but i wouldnt expect it from just tightening the wheel skewer.........only the OP knows how tight hes done them and therefore if the paint flaking off is acceptable or not - i personally would take it back to the shop - that is purely my opinion.

  • why not?

Its a fairly high pressure point on the frame.
The QR has indents on it so that it grips the frame. When you undo the QR is is almost impossible to stop that end spinning which will damage the paint.

It would happen sooner or later... wether it be a week or a month later. The pressure and rotating of the QR has just "torn" the paint off....

Take it back to the shop but I bet I know what they'd say.
