Sport mp3 players

My sony mp3 player has given up the ghost and I was wondering what ones others used.
The thing that went wrong with mine was the headphone connection, which is a bit annoying as it was the noise reduction type and the headphones won't fit a normal round connection.
Any recommendations? Looking for 2-4g memory, not too bulky and something that will survive being out on the bike.
All my life I've wanted to be someone; I guess I should have been more specific.

Zen Stone Plus. The 'plus' refers to the speaker that comes on when the earphones are unplugged. Good for playing tunes while chatting to friends on the uphill bits. Also good for commuting as it lets you listen for traffic. It's LCD screen is handy too (Shuffle hasn't got a screen). I've had my 2 Gb one for over a year now so there's maybe a newer, better version of it out. There was a 4 Gb version also. I use the silicon case that came with it and Sony earphones.

  • i've recently got a 2gb philips Gogear player from tesco, was £28 iirc in store, is approx 2"x2" and has a strap that when hung around your neck on the bike yo dont even notice it there! Great little bit of kit! no fancy software to install either as it pops up as an extra drive and is Drag and drop.

(is a lot more than the store price online but is the same player,)

Sounds Awsome through my big Sony cans too for chill;ing aorund the house!!

I used to have one of the Sony ones and got sick and tired of the rubbish software (Sonicstage!) and the fact that if I didnt use it for a few days the battery would completely discharge itself.

Finally jumped on the bandwagon and brought an Ipod Nano, and its fantastic. Yes it is overpriced, yes everyone has one, but there is a reason. I use mine in the gym, at Aston Hill, on general rides, I even wore it last year when I cycled across part of Madagascar and it hasnt failed once on me, hasnt felt too bulky (I use the nike armband designed for it).

Big thumbs up from me for one (even though it pains me to do it!)

    +1 for Apple
There's a reason why everyone refer's to MP3 players as 'ipods'

I use the iPod shuffle, 2nd Gen (the clip on one)

Its fantastic and battery life is brilliant....

Mainly use it in the gym for running and working out - small size and stylish too (not that that matters)

Only downside is it has to be used with iTunes and you can't just drag and drop mp3's over ....

    +1 for iPod Shuffle
Small, light, very weather resistant, as in survived an overnight storm outside on the bar of my commuter and cheap. The clip is one of the best designed and most practical I've come across and the battery life is quite incredible

I had a MP3 player with no screen years ago and it was a pain in the arse. Is the Shuffle actually usable if you have loads of tracks or 2hr long mixes?

yes it is cos you can make sure it plays the tracks in chronological order as opposed to shuffle mode.... ;)

Nothing worse than listening to a good mix session and it skipping to the 3rd track on the second CD!

+1 for the 2nd gen clippy Shuffle.

Great for biking and if it gets bust, lost, soaked I've only wasted 25 quid as opposed to a couple of hundred.

I have a Zune 80gb by Microsoft, these are not for sale in UK shops yet although they have been out in the US for a year or 2. They working onthe 3rd generation at the moment. I love my Zune, i have 600 albums on it at the moment and a few Video's ,podcasts etc and still have 35 gb left of memory, The zune is a good sturdy model "solid", they also do 4gb and 16 and 30 gb. The 4gb model is alot smaller.

I payed £140 from US on Ebay.

Another vote for sansa clip, i use it as my gym hack, i have beaten the crap out of it and it still sounds great, i have it hooked up to my custom iem's.

A good pair of earphones at a bargain price would be these.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

I just use my phone's Mp3 player (sony K800i) tough as anything phone with good sound quality currently have a 2gb memory card with about 400 tunes on it, Battery lasts nearly 12 hours, Plus you can take pictures and make calls as well. Saves carrying to many boxes round with you on the trails. Works for me 8)

Another Creative Zen Stone here. No software needed is a big plus for me, drag and drop, no silly reencoding. I wear it on a lanyard around my neck when biking or clipped onto my shorts when jogging. Similar size and weight to an ipod shuffle, the battery charges over USB much like the ipods as well, it's definitely over 10 hours life, I don't recall mine ever running out of power.
The 'plus' refers to the speaker that comes on when the earphones are unplugged.

The plus actually refers to the screen, I managed to get one without a screen due to not quite understanding the naming, oops! :) Easy enough to get around though as you can hop between folders with 1 button.

Another vote here for the 'Sansa Cip'. I've had one for a while now, and it's a great little player...the battery seems to last forever!

Weighs nothing, relativley cheap, and the sound is amazing. I bought my daughter an 'iPod Nano', and the the 'Sansa Clip' rivals, if not beats the sound of the overpriced 'iPod', and is a pleasure to use in comparison.

i love my old Sony Walkman NW-E005, not sure where you would get one these days though.
tough as f... cheap as f... better sounds and battery than my ipod and you can use easily use the play/stop/rewind/forward buttons when its in my short pockets without any faffing or silly expensive rain attracting armbands. sonicstage is not great but neither is the apple guff.
on another point how can people use the supplied headphones with sony and especially apple, they are so piss poor it is a joke.

    Another Sansa Clip owner here.

It's unbeatable for the price. The clip is simple yet robust. The interface is logical and easy to use without looking. And despite it's size, it's sound quality is amongst the absolute best of the mp3 player market.

I wouldn't swap mine for any other player on the market.
Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.

+1 sansa clip. 8gb, screen, long battery life, easy drag and drop interface with windows media player, tough (survived the last merida in bad conditions), has an fm tuner and cost £34 from dixons tax free. 8)
