I have just spent yet more cash on a pair of Shimano shoes just cos they matched my bike and new Gore kit! I now can't afford the new wheels I want, but I still intend to get them, even if it means getting another credit card!!!

I don't understand your dilemma. Bike, shoes, wheels, kit. How can this be a problem?

No worries, do what I did, change job intentionally, take a massive pay cut, then find out your other half is expecting your first child, let her take maternity leave, then buy a new, more expensive house and think to yourself..........I would love a new bike, then fork out £2400 to satisfy your craving for new carbon, even though you don't need it.

If this sounds a bit unrealistic, I can promise you it isn't and if I can afford to do all the above so can you. Go and treat yourself and don't give it a second thought!!!! :D

I've just done all that too, and ended up buying two new bikes over the last three months.

    There's always a way...

You could always sell a kidney. Wheels are important after all.

You shouldn't be reacking up debt on credit cards for stuff you don't need. Why not wait a couple of months - put by some cash - if you still want something in a couple of months - you know you really want it ....not just a passing fad.

Seriously . . . . do you NEED the wheels? Not got some on the bike already?

Save the cash. Credit cards will give you months to regret your purchase.

I always make an excuse to postpone such desires - until next payday, or somesuch date. 90% of the time I either forget I really wanted it, or its replaced by something else I really want. If after a month or more I still really want it, then I get it.

New kit, new wheels why worry about money. Look good , feel good thats my motto. I used to spend my cash on binge drinking and kebabs. Now I am a cyclist and have lost many pounds(£) to my pastime. Asso kit is my weakness - its just so good.

I was going to go on moneysavingexpert.com and ask for advice about gear ratios, but this thread made me realise what a terrible idea it would be ;)

    no worries.

i've just spent the better part of a grand on a campag record 2008 groupset. this is in addition to the full 2008 chorus groupset which is already sitting boxed, brand new and untouched in my cupboard. in addition to that i've also got the best part of an old 2006 centaur groupset kicking around.

the 2 bikes i have are already fulled specced up with chorus and record and working perfectly and i'm going to keep them as they are. i don't even have another bike or frame to put the a new groupset on but i just wanted to have the record 'cos i don't want to go to 11 speed, campag prices will continue to rise and "just because" you never know when you might want to do a new bike build.

    it's a disease i tell ya.

Still waiting for my £38 carbon bottle cage for the Scott... Its been a couple of months now, and I think LBS have forgoten about me.

In these times, have seriously cut down on food so can still buy kit. And yes, we've had 50% pay cuts here (on basic, while commission is a wet dream at the mo), still owe £2K on the Scott and wife is leaving her job soon with another nipper on the way.

No point in worrying about it though - off for some more training... :D

Haha I'm in the same position! i'm really broke at the moment but still trying to justify why dropping over £1k on a bike is not so bad
  • You ought to try getting a £1000 bill for your car unexpectedly. That soon stops you spending money on bikes.... :x And I hardly ever even drive the damn thing!!

    That's why I don't have a car

Actually That's one of the reasons I'm using to justify this purchase. All of a sudden my "car" breaks down and it's gonna cost 1k to get it fixrd but get a nice shinny new bike FREE in the process
