I'm thinking about off loading 2 of my bikes and buying a Marin Muirwoods 29er , problem is, there doesn't seem to be many 29" road tyres available.

Anyone know of a good stockist ?

um unless i'm being dence, not by any means impossible! 29inch are 700c wheels. the gotcha will be how wide the rim is, ie how narrow a tire would safely fit.

Yep, I've heard that , so why are they called 29" .... is it the depth of the tyre itself

If it's too much hassle getting the right tyres I might as well get the 26" version and save me self £75 . :?

Isn't it a new made up way of saying 700c? But "mtb'ers" wouldn't buy it so... 29er it is!

    Mandy would be proud

    Its all marketing.

My Salsa has "29er" disc wheels. Its a cyclocross bike. I'm running 700x28's at the moment.

A 29er mtb tyre is an off road 700c tyre.

The whole cyclocross tyre market is yours to choose from.

I always thought they were called 29" simply because they're in the MTB category. Just like MTB frames are, more often than not, sized in inches and road frames in CM, which is why road tyres are in mm are they not?

This is all assumption though, so I could be totally wrong

Yup - those scratty mtbers don't want to be doing with all that metric sh!t...

... its more likely becuase road cycling is centred in Europe, whereas mtbing came out of California.

So, mountain mike measurements aren't in imperial measurements, they are in standard units.

I like the look of Marin bikes, but find their range rather confusing - and the 29" thing just lost me to be honest, until reading this thread.

My search for a matt-black, v-brake, 700cc wheeled, stealthy town bike goes on (for circa £400)....

hasn't got 700cc wheels but ticks all the rest: Ridgeback cyclone
...and you can pick it up for nearer to £250 now. It's got pretty good reviews to boot.

I'm riding the 2006 26" version as my wet weather and runaround bike and it's great. A bit heavy, but it takes knocks and keeps going. You'll need to replace the huuuuuge tyres (47c!) for something a bit quicker and maybe chop the very wide bars down a bit, but they're both easily doable.

to confuse the issue even more, several German sites I have seen insist on calling 700c wheels for "trekking" 28" instead of 29" Probably they were doing that before the US industry adopted the 29" moniker for their latest fashion project

To confuse further I have an inner tube marked as "700x23/28 27x1.125"....

700mm is of course 27.5" and yet the 27" wheel is biggest of all the common sizes(not counting 36" as common).......not that the wheel 'sizes' are measurements, but yes 29"=700.
