"Sorry for the short notice, hope you can make it.
Please see message body below for contact details in relation to this. Local Bamboo Bike business launches in Manchester this bike week
15 June 2009
A local Manchester business launches this bike week, selling bamboo bikes – high performance for the rider and greener for the environment.
RAW Bamboo Bikes – based in North Manchester and run by local Rachel Hammond – is the sole importer of the bikes, designed and built by hand in California, North America.
As part of National Bike week, the bikes – road and mountain bikes – will be at Merci (Manchester Environmental Resource Centre Initiative) this Thursday 18th June at 3pm.
The bikes will be available for photos and test rides.
Please confirm attendance with RAW.
Contact RAW Bamboo Bikes: Rachel Hammond on bike@rawbamboobikes.co.uk or on 07970 780514.
Editor Notes:
• RAW Bamboo Bikes sells bamboo bike frames (£2175) and complete bikes (from £3000) to individuals as well as wholesale
• Merci is based as Bridge 5 Mill, 22a Beswick Street, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 7HR
• Bamboo is a fast growing grass requiring significantly less land and water to grow than other trees, and can absorb up to 5 times more CO2 and release up
to 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. It can be harvested after 4 – 5 years, and re-grows easily
• The bikes benefit from bamboo’s vibration dampening qualities, giving a smoother ride, and is easily comparable to steel in terms of weight and performance.
• Bike week celebrates all things bike , and encourages everyone to enjoy the health and green benefits of travelling on two wheels. Find an event near you - visit www.bikeweek.org.uk for more information
• Five reasons to get on your bike:
1. Over half of our car journeys are less than 5 miles – swapping them for an easy 30 minute bike ride can save you a small fortune in fuel costs
2. Cyclists live on average at least two years longer than non-cyclists and their fitness levels are equivalent to being ten years younger – so forget nip and tuck, think pedal and push!
3. Cycling is the ultimate family activity; it’s free, healthy, fun and encourages children to be independent
4. Cycling gets you out and about and you’re more likely to find that cute little delicatessen or beautiful park you never knew existed than when you’re cooped up in a car
5. In a hurry? During rush-hour, a bicycle is twice as fast as a car - good if you hate traffic jams! Even better, you won’t spend a penny on parking "

Is the Bamboo grown in California too? I doubt it.
So they harvest bamboo from a Chinese forest, threby threatening the Giant Panda's that feed on the stuff, ship it a third of the way around the world to the factory in California, build a bike from it, then ship it around half the world to the UK, by which time it's carbon footprint is huge....
...and they sell it as being "green".0 -

There's loads of info on bamboo bikes on the net .
This one may answer a few questions.

I've seen a Calfee bike in real life. It looked gorgeous. (was full Ultegra and a cool £3,700).
Mr Cynical Eau Rouge - considering bamboo grows just about anywhere I'd say yes, the varied and versatile Californian climate is probably pretty good match0 -
frame from £2100 and £3000 for a complete bike   What happens if our out riding and you come across a giant panda, answer me that :?0

Still has to be shipped over from 6,000miles away, probably through the Panama Canal.
Don't get me wrong, I'm actually all for global trade and the like. It's "eco friendly" marketing I have a problem with. 'Slightly Greener' is not the same as 'Green'0
