pulling out valves

I seem to have a problem with (presta) valves when I use my mini-pump: for one, it tends to bend the valve stem (the bit with the screwy thing that you undo) and secondly, the other day when I pulled the pump off the valve, the whole bl00dy valve came out

Am I doing something wrong? Have no problems with the track pump at home

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Does your mini pump have a hose or flexible bit that attaches onto the valve or does the body of the pump attach directly onto the valve?

If the latter then the physical act/motion of pumping is going to be transferred to the valve and depending on how vigorous you are and how often you use the mini pump you can expect to weaken the valve somewhat more quickly than using a track pump or any other type of pump that attaches with a hose.
