handle bar width

this isn't a 70's moustache grooming question!!!!
Has anybody any advice on experiance with swapping handlebars for a wider than standard. My spesh Rockhopper has what seems to be standard 26" width handlebars and was wondering if being a gent with broader shoulders would benefit from a wider bar width. I already run with mini bar ends that i find excellent for technical uphill acents but noticed that they have pushed my normal grip position in a bit.
I generally ride XC across grim Northern moorlands and the odd trail center.

yes, i've got broad shoulders and like 700mm bars, i might even go a bit wider and get some FSA gravity lite bars that are really wide.0

i took the plunge and put some wide bars and a short stem on my bike a few weeks ago while in whistler it definatley made the bike better on the downhills and teccy terrain.
i cant remeber what width they are but they a inch or so wider than the raceface ones i took off..
i will be putting wide bars on my hardtail now...www.bearbackbiking.com

wider bars give more control and greater leverage over the front wheel, they are def a good thing, go for it!I like bikes and stuff0

I am broad shouldered and also a wide bar fan.. much more control. I also prefer shorter stems too.0

Yep another vote for wide bars and a short stem here.0

+1 for wide bars
raceface atlas fr ...... 31.5" wide and they come in purple0 -
A reason not to get wider bars would be if you often scrape the bars you have on trailside obstacles like trees. Or if the bike will no longer fit through the shed door.
All my bars are on the wide side but that's what I've always used. My longest stem is 70mm.0
