Being quite new to MB'ing I'd like to ask a rather naive question...
I've noticed proper routes are signed with a white bicycle on a blue background and accompanied by I guess their route number, can these be accessed andn viewed on-line and who controls these, thanks.

these will be NCNs - National Cycle Network routes - which are co-ordinated by Sustrans in conjunction with local authorities and the like.
here's the website - http://www.sustrans.org.uk/what-we-do/national-cycle-network
and on that page you'll find a pdf of the entire UK network.
they sell loads of maps fo different parts of the country
and here's a link you might also find useful http://www.sustrans.org.uk/what-we-do/national-cycle-network/route-numbering-system
enjoy - and welcomeNed Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”
Homer Simpson: “I wish. We were bicycling to a lake.”

The NCN is also mainly based on back roads, resurfaced disued railway lines and country lanes. The surfaces are generally hard-packed or tarmac.
They are therefore suitable for just about every type of bike. Great for getting into it, and linking up other routes, but not really off-roading proper!0 -
Thanks.0
