I'm sure I wouldn't get much argument on this forum if I proclaimed myself an idiot. Well,
that would seem to be the case these days. All these years I have been buying tires
in the 700 21-23 range because, well, those are the "fast" ones. Anything else is just
for those, dare I say it, touring riders. This "conventional wisdom" fell apart a while back
when for some unknown reason I said to myself "why not try a wider pair to see if you can get a bit more comfort for my annual 500 mile Rocky Mountain torture fest". This was prompted by a few previous Colorado rides in which various parts of my body became "uncomfortable" after said miles. So I sucked it up and shelled out the 80 dollars apiece for Tufo's top line 700-25 tubular clincher tires. I may never go back. It felt completely different. Smooth rolling and they even felt faster. Looking forward to the mountains. And yes, I'm an idiot for not trying them sooner.

I have that attitude as well, but somehow i've ended up with a 25mm schwalbe marathon on the back and a 28mm vittoria randonneur on the front? and tbh i don't really feel any difference.Ribble Gran Fondo

I suppose it could all be my imagination but it sure does feel a lot smoother.0 -
For 80 dollars each I'd expect it to be like a bleedin' magic carpet ride! But I trust your judgment implicitly Dennis, and I may well give 25s a go next time I need new tyres (about 2012 at my current weekly mileage...)0

Weather over here is slowly turning into what promises to be a hot and humid summer.0 -
