I need to buy a torque wrench; any recommendations? I don't want to break the bank, so something basic and good value preferred.

I have a couple of Sealey ones. An STW1012 that does 2-24Nm so ideal for carbon stems, seat clamps, brake calipers etc and an STW1011 which is 7-112Nm for cassettes, bottom brackets and so on.

They are 3/8 drive so you'll need a 3/8" to 1/2" adaptor for most cassette lockring tools.

Both are available for decent prices here:

BBB one, gone up a bit since I bought mine, but it's a quality piece of kit.

+1 for Sealey, lifetime warrany, calibrated too and mine came in a hard carry case, it does all the smaller stuff like stems and seat bolts etc.
I never bother using one for heavier stuff

Thanks for the replies- great links too!

Does the Sealey come with the allen key attachments I'll most likely need for stems; seat posts etc?

Couldn't make that out from the seller's page.

The Sealey I bought was supplied without hex keys. I got my 3/8" drive keys from Halfords - they sell a decent set in their 'professional tools' range that covers most/all of the usual bike fixing sizes. Costs around £15 I think.

I bought a sealey set of hex keys from Ebay.
Came with 4mm all the way up to 12mm in 60mm long and 30mm long.
I think I paid around £15 delivered for it and it came in a blow moulded case.

    Thanks for everybody's help here.

I did try twice to order the Sealey but both came back to tell me it was now out of stock and may take a month - I did get a free set of sealey hex keys though, after they were shipped immediately before I cancelled! CASHBACK! (in the words of Alan Partridge)

Anyhow, I ordered, over the phone, the BBB yesterday, 49.95 from Webster's Cycles in Leicester (first shop to appear on a google search)....it arrived this morning! And saved me a few £ on the RRP.

So a recommendation for Webster's then. :D Also known as mailordercycles.com
