SRAM Cranksets and Chainrings

Hi,

I'm looking to getting a new crankset (a double instead of a triple), and have been debating the idea of geting compact vs standard with a friend of mine.

I've noticed that you can get replacement chain rings for shimano cranksets. Say if you wanted to change from compact to standard you wouldn't require a whole new crank just the chainrings.

Does anybody know if you can get replacement chain rings for SRAM cranksets?

Standard 110mm chainrings from TA, Stronglight or FSA will fit SRAM. If you wanted to return to a standard chainset the rings are readily available in 110mm formats

A few things Jim...

You can't swap from double to compact SHIMANO chainrings. Different bolt diameters.

You can use 3rd party rings to make the swap however.

Same applies with Sram - you can't do a straight swap of chainrings from double to compact using OEM parts.

So - basically - if you aren't fussed about who makes your chainrings, you can up/downgrade between compact and double using the same crank arms - but you won't be able to use the 'correct' chainrings.

And Sram chainrings won't fit Shimano.

compact rings fit compact chainsets (110mm BCD)

standard double rings fit standard double chainsets (130BCD for Shimano, 135BCD for Campag)

it's got nothing to do with who makes them.

so you can't fit one size to the other.

As for fitting one make to another.... yep that's fine*

for example, I run a 33 TA ring and a 48t Shimano ring on my SRAM compact


*the only exception is Campag. Some of their compact rings are not strictly 110mm BCD

Ah right so the BCD (whatever that stands for) is 110 for compact and 130 (sometimes 135) for standard and the two aren't interchable.

But yeah i'm not fussed what brand it is as long as it does the job.

It's the bolt diameter. The 5 little bolts that attach the chainring to the crank arm. 110mm for compact, 130mm for double. And the size will be determined by the crankarms.

You can get chainrings with different numbers of teeth (eg 50 teeth, 53 teeth) in the different diameters. So you can make up different gearing ratios to approximate going from a double chainset to a compact chainset. That's what I was trying to say...
