Carrera Virtuoso [07/08], Front Derailleur chain rubbing?

Heya all,
I finally got hold of that bike I was bidding on, on eBay she's a cracker too the tyres had not even been inflated since she was brought or could have been because she'd been in storage over the last two years.
Anyway, inflated the tyres late last night and shot up and down the street for 10mins seeing how things go, firstly I need to adjust the seat a little and today I'm going for a longer ride and then setup the handlebar stem better.
One thing I did find was while going through the gears the rear cassette was clickering and slow shifting and after some reading I found a twisty thing that adjusts the cable tension so while the bike was up-side-down and using my hand to pedal and fiddling with this twisty thing it soon became clear I could easily clear the slow/clickering of the rear cassette shifting.
Another thing I came across was that after I'd done this little modification and then shifting the gears on the front derailleur a slight chain rubbing action started actually on the front derailleur itself, if I was using the largest of the front cogs it would rub on one side and then switching to the lower front cog and then shifting the rear cogs a few times it would begin again to rub the chain but on the other side of the front derailleur.
I've looked around the bike to see how it is adjusted, but seems a little more complicated then it was to adjust the rear cassette, I had the idea that the front derailleur needs to be fatter with a wider slot? if anyone understands my puny ill-educated and not knowing the lingo lame answer or fix to the matter in hand.
I've completed a few searches but to be honest their is SO much information on this side I was lost, lost and completely lost, that alone but the words derailleur must have brought me close to 3K searching pages to flick through
So with all that and realised without knowing what I looking at I'd thought I'd ask about and explain as best I could, hopefully someone will take pity on me and throw me a bone of knowledge from which I could start learning a bit more and fix this myself. Just need some pointing in the right direction and a bit of hand-holding in the way of me asking some rather daft questions
Kind regards,
MajorPayne
I'll come back and upload a couple of smaller images of the matter and maybe that would help someone else help me out with the rough right way to go about moding this.

Some chain rub on the front mech is unavoidable when you're using odd combinations of gears, e.g. big chainring at the front and big sprocket at the back. You should adjust the mech so that it does not rub when it is in the front big/back small combo and the front small/back big combo.
It's a pain in the backside if there aren't any barrel adjusters though!

That's awesome fella, a very good read I'll have of that link you've kindly given me
-sorry for the delay in posting, I've had the bike up-side-down an playing with the pedals again trying to workout what would need adjusting and when. Seems I am playing with the right bits because as I adjust now the chain falls off and when I adjusted back it did not..
So I'm in the right area of things, just not got the knack or know the lingo as yet or really know what I'm doing. But I'm sure that link you've provided will help me out quite a bit
Going to print out a few things I've found so far, pop down the local park with some tools, do a few laps, adjust, few more laps..Adjust, you get me
Very best regards,

I take it you know about the trimming function on the left hand(front derailleur) STI shifter and how to use it?0

My front derailleur rubs if I'm on the smallest chainring (front) and the smallest 2 cogs (back) but it's set up correctly as far as I'm concerned.0
