Try if you can to get on the bikes as they all differ in size, angles, stems - reach etc.
I am 5'11", 13.5stone and ride a 19" bike. My last frame was 17" so go figureAdam.
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
Current ride - Yeti ASR 5a X00 -
I dont know about the Giant and Mongoose but I've got a GT Avalacnhe 1.0 and it's great. I do 8 - 10 hours a weeks (training for a mtb marathon) and love it. I'm 5-10 and got a medium so I'd thourouhly recommend a large for you. It's an 'all mountain' steed so it's designed to be well strong - no problem for your weight.
The 09 model is going for around the £600 mark - so I'd assume yours maybe an 07 or 08. The 09 model is a good bit lighter (different fork and maybe brakes I think). Overall its a great bike to get you hooked and it's got great geometry so if you do decide to upgrade it then I think its a good long term investment.
