Just discovered a very worrying website that lists spectacular failures of carbon fibre frames and components. Very recent as well.

Someone should start a site called 'everyday aluminium frame failures' - I've seen far more broken and cracked aluminium frames than carbon ones. Nobody's twisting your arm to buy one - buy a steel or titanium frame if you're worried but don't come on here acting all Chicken Licken...

the problem is people buy top of the range bikes designed to be ridden for one or two seasons by a pro, their 100kg arse sits on it and after a few years of year round riding they complain, carbon is great, for racing and occasional summer use but not for prolonged use in all weather, most of the bikes on that site looked filthy, like my winter bike

eg that campag chainset was probably being used all year round by some walrus and it just isn't designed for that sort of use, it is a high performance pro level part
Carbon fibre, it's all nonsense. Drink beer. Ride a steel bike. Don't be a ponce.

But mtbhenry, if you read the stories about how those bikes came to be so trashed, it's no wonder they are:

a - filthy - after having been scraped along the road by a truck or somesuch
    b- broken

If you slam a bike into a wall at 30mph, have a spectacular stack in a road race or get yourself run over, it's more than likely that your frame will be useless thereafter - it doesn't matter if it's carbon, Ti, steel, bamboo...

Yes some carbon frames fail in ordinary circumstances, as do frames made of any other material. If carbon frames were so frail and only good for a year or two, why would the likes of Trek and Specialized offer lifetime guarantess on their frames?

But they are not all failures, are they?

I mean, being hit by a truck or a car at a speed!!! Come on!! I don't expect any bike of any material to sustain that kind of damage.
