Tip For Removing Stubborn Pedals?

Does anyone know a handy tip for removing stubborn pedals from the crankarm?
I've tried brute force - I even whacked the spanner with a hammer - but the pedal nut won't budge! (pretty sure I'm turning in the right direction too, anticlockwise).
It's a 10 year old bike and the pedals have never been removed, so that might be part of the problem. I'm guessing a lube spray won't do anything, as it won't be able to penetrate the threads? Any tips?
Cheers,
J
