After reading some of the guides on what to buy I'm still uncertain, so thought maybe sme of you experts can shed some light. I've previously owned a Saracen Xcell and a DMR Sidekick, but looking for a bike to do the following:
- Downhill (not too intense)
- XC (single track and a fair few bumps on the way)
Don't want anything too flimsy or weighs a ton either, but a setup that can pack a punch but suitable of those long distance xc runs. Probably prefer a hardtail have been looking at a Trek 6300 Disc 2009 bike, but still not sure.
My budget is between £500 - £800 at the very upper limit would prefer somewhere in the middle though. Looking to buy a bike at evans cycles as i have quite a few vouchers thanks

The Trek is a thoroughbred XC bike - a million miles from a DH bike! But if your DH is really XC but down a slope then it will be a good choice.
Something a little burlier would be the GT Avalanche or Carrera Fury.0 -
Well i live near Aston hill if you have heard of it and looking to do the sort of middle downhill run with a alot of xc as well a mixture... I did look at a jump bike but then again yeah they can take a beating but suppose they are not really worth the extra weight.
I was considering a trek 6300 disc, commencal combi disc 09 or a specialized rockhopper comp disc 09.0 -
Yep, I have heard of it! I would be tempted to go for something with a little more travel, and relaxed in the angles ie:

Thats quite nice, I noticed the majority of the ones i look at have Tora or Dart suspension, not sure which one is better? I'm a bit more of an aggressive rider so prefer a frame not too large, I'm 5 foot 7 so looking at 15''/16'' frame i believe.0

Tora by a long shot!0

Any hardtail XC bike in that price range could handle the red run at Aston Hill. Go and try a few. See what feels good.0
