Have you found out what your local bike shops stock? The only way to find the right bike for you is to ride them and the best way to do that is visit the bikes shops around you. To get a good idea of what falls into your price range take a look at the "What Hardtail Thread". I am assuming you're only looking at a HT at that price range though.

Also probably need to consider what type of riding you're doing at weekends, XC, DH, Freeride, Trails.

Don't forget Decathlon and Halfords for that price range.

I will maybe to save you a little time draw up a quick list of a fewe bikes well regarded at about £500 (most slightly over your budget but definitely worth lookign at):

Genesis Core 20 - Can be got for £550 or lower (also this is my faithful steed)
Commencal Combi Disc - has been seen as low as £510 I think
Boardman Sport - £550 exclusively from Halfords
Carerra Fury - £500 (might have gone up to £550) often reduced, exclusively from Halfords
    Decathlon Rockrider 8.1 - £500

Just a few tips but seriously get out there and ride a few.
  • The Carerra Fury is 20% off -- £449 (£49 more than the last sale though)
  • thanks yes weekends cross country ect , i went on a mountain biking weekend last summer in the lakes which was road and tracks, superb weekend, only down fall i had to hire a bike some giant make not to sure which, ans seemed a bit heavy

    Hi,

Would deffo check out the Carrera Fury, at that price its an absolute bargain (Tho not as 'bargainous' as the last sale lol). Fork is very highly regarded.

Other than that, you wont go far wrong with any of the bikes on the list that keirtristan posted.

Ive got the Boardman Sport, and Im very happy with it!
