Nearly at the top of Izoard. Break out ahead.

Valverde looking splendid with his custom Pinarello full yellow jersey and bib shorts and custom helmet, glasses and gloves. Looking forward to the photos.

Martin's pacing Millar at the front of the peloton. Caisse doing their job very well and setting pace. If only Contador had such a good support team.

This climb is beautiful in its own way. Very impressive. Makes the Giro climbs laughable really and this is not even the TdF.

Peloton going so fast I thought they were descending from the heli cam! Just one long line now.

Astraloza attacked a while back and is still out there. Anyone got a time check?

Fedrigo from Bbox over the top first.

    Wow this descent is brilliant.

Astraloza burning the descent with Zberg on his wheel. Swiss National kits are really classy. His BMC has a touch of red which is nice.

Garate attacks - fighting hard for a TdF spot!

Astarloza might not win it, but great PTP call scwxx!

Moncoutié 30m before Contador who leads in Evans and Valverde. Think Millar came in about 50m behind.

Eurosport International show an hour and three quarters (lucky me) and Sh*tish Eurosport, 15 minutes!
    What a joke.

great seeing Millar there again....but like was saying earlier, the Dauphine has a history of some bizzare results, not ever repeated at the TDF-Armand De Las cuevas, Mottet, ...I can't help but think Contador is doing as LA in 05, rope a dope tactics, make his rivals think he is down...

it's not just eurosport. france 3 (grenoble) inexplicably cut to a programme about camping holidays just as the lead group went up the cobbled climb near the end!

i enjoyed astarloza's move though, even if it cost millar a place on GC.

dave - do you even think it's rope a dope? he said at the start he was going to sit and watch, and he has.

It was sooo much nicer listening to the French commentary today. Even though I didn't get all of it in translation I know enough to realise those guys knew what they were talking about, unlike our Brit friends....

Shame for Millar, but only a few seconds in it still, and Astarloza will have burned some energy on that solo effort.

Same happened on FR3 (Lyon) missed the last 3K or so - no explanation! Even so nice to have the French commentary (even if I don't follow it fully) with Laurent Jalabert in the commentary box plus a reporter (Laurent ??) on a motorbike commenting from within the race itself.

You know comments like that can get misunderstood around here!
Contador looks exactly like he did in the first week of his Giro.

Can't help but feel the DL and Suisse are little more than organised training rides for the very top boys.

Millar looks comfy. Doubt whether he'll look the same, next time he climbs Ventoux.
Who knows? After his exploits at the Giro, maybe we'll have Bradley and him slugging it out to be Garmin's top climbing dog.

I think Evans will privately come away with the impression he's where he needs to be in his tour prep based on where he sees Contador just now....I was a little surprised by his Ventoux ride...never left Evans wheel and still lost a few seconds, quite a bit down in the TT...even lance's Dauphine 05 was not that...think LA was 3rd, but well off Mayo. I don't tend to listen to the rider's view on how he's treating a race as it is al about deflecting pressure... and instead just watch his results..

Maybe that's the point -- why should Contador flag up to Evans where he's at fitness or tactics-wise on the climb?

Contador attacked today on the little finishing climb - failed to get a gap, but he most definately tried.

    Check the contador quotes here:

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id= ... jun12news2
"Since the start of the race, it was my intention to preserve myself," the Spanish 2007 Tour de France winner said. "I think about the Tour and don't want to punish myself here."

"I'm happy with this result, which was what I expected. In this race, I can allow myself to hold back a little. I didn't feel super, but it was what I hoped for: if I was at a hundred percent already, I might not actually make it to the finish when we climb this mountain again in five weeks time."

he is doing what he wants in not giving it everything in this and trying to just use it for training so he can peak at TdF. I expect evans is slightly ahead in his prep but still won't be giving it everything.
