Has anyone ever fractured their patella?

I had an off the other day. Initial damage report suggested my Helmet took a good wallop and cracked (new one already purchased) and my hip / elbow / shin took most of the impact, as thats where the grazes are. Over the next two days my knee has started giving me jip. Stairs are painful and is walking more then a few hundred metres.

I've done a few searches for self diagnosis and it seems that a fractured patella is possibly the cause, i'm hoping its just a bruised bone though. Has anyone had ever done this? Were you able to walk etc ?

    Seriously. Get to A&E.

Rule of thumb that works for me: soft tissue damage starts to get better after a few days. Hard tissue gets worse.

Get to A&E. Now. Before the Friday evening rush.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

Yeah, i have training i can't miss from 2 till 3 and was gonna go after. The pain didn't really start for 24 hours, and its not really that swollen or purple. Gonna get to A&E this afternoon (Luckily i work in a hospital) .

I'm hoping the lack of visual damage means i should just HTFU!

I love that you work in a hospital and yet still have no got checked. Way to MTFU!

Seriously as Greg says, get checked fella. If you leave it and it compromises your riding you'd be pretty pi$$ed...

    Hope the knee is okay!

I ran into 'TTFU' earlier -what does it mean? The first T obviously. :P

OK, that was pretty good 1 hour turnaround. Didn't even have to name drop.

Nurse did some stress tests and confirmed no fracture just possible liagment / bone bruising. Gave me enough Diclofenac Sodium and Co-dydramol for an elephant and sent me on my way. I'm a bit gutted i they wouldn't give me a crutch though, i was hoping to con my way into a seat on the tube.

    Thanks for the advise guys.

I fractured my patella when I was about 20. Was in a full-leg cast for weeks. Getting up stairs was awkward, and I couldn't ride my bike. :(

However, I am unable to tell you whether I could walk. I was taken directly from the scene of the accident to Casualty in an ambulance, and carted about on a stretcher/trolley. No walking.

Agent57 wil know better but my impression is that fracturing a patella is absolutely excruciating. I'm guessing it would have appeared prominently on your initial damages assessment

Still A&E is the right answer.

To be quite honest, I was more in shock than in pain. When I came to, I was oblivious to any damage to myself; I was in tears at the state my beloved Beetle was in though.

It did hurt, but I don't recall it being too bad. It wasn't a bad fracture though, and as noted before, I didn't try to walk on it at any point.

    Still miss that car.

Should've gone to A&E for the head crack for starters.
