Advice for my charity relay ride (120 miles over 24 hours)

Next weekend for example I'll be carrying flapjack, peanuts and probably a few ride shots, and my support crew will be feeding me pasta pots and muller rice at the 6 checkpoints over 95 miles. I think the organisers have arranged for hot potatoes at the halfway point too.
I read this thinking that it seemed a bit excessive for a 95 mile bike ride, then realised it was a 95 mile run  I know you do Ultra events Jen, but chapeau (or whatever the running equivalent is).
I think with a bit of training I might be able to run 95 miles over a week or so
i think my only suggestion to add to the advice above is, take something to help you relax between your stints as you'll probably be a bit hyper.0 -

doesn't look terrible pale in the flesh, far from it, i'm sensitive in that i tan very very quickly, though at mo have the farmers/cycllist tan...
though as i struggle in the heat i do tend to end up will silly tans as i don't like warm weather much at all.0 -
Dehydration is your worst enemy on an event like this - gels and such will boost your energy but you still need to make sure you get plenty of fluid down you - I make my own up using half unsweetened orange juice, half water, pince of salt, teaspoon of sugar and an electrolite tablet per litre
Good luck 8)0 -
My brother got the olive skin - I look like my (100% British) mum. Sucks really. I'm trying to get brown though! Only factor 15 today!
Thanks Jen0 -
So it looks like I will be rear-wheel-less for the ride - just checking in case anyone local to me wants to lend me a decent 10-speed Shimano wheel!
Or I could do it on the fixie. If it weren't for group riding, drafting etc. I might even consider it...0 -

When does the ride start? I have a rear Fulcrum 1 you could borrow but I've promised my bro we'll go for a ride on sat morning and will need the wheel for that as it's attached to my Focus. Should be free after 1pm though...- 2023 Vielo V+1

Thanks Jash - it starts about 9am Saturday, sadly. Kind of you to offer though! If your bro can't make it drop me a line0
-
Sorry Blondo, completely forgot about your predicament. You can borrow my Fulcrum 3 for the weekend, I'm just doing Brighton overnight fixed.
I'll try get it into work tomorrow (damn, it's today already), then you could collect it Soho-ish anytime in the week. Might take tyre and tube off to save some weight, but you've got those bits, right?0 -
That's really kind of you! I have everything other than the wheel, though it'd be preferable to not have to muck around with cassettes if that's okay (mainly because I've never actually removed/installed a cassette).0
-
Got the wheel complete with 12-25 cassette at work. Not sure if I can make the Morpeth on Friday but it could be a good excuse for a beer before then. Otherwise you'd have to get it off us up here in Fitzrovia.
I will be checking for loose spokes, so don't think of trying to pull a fast one.0 -

Aw, you guys are swell! Thanks Ian - how's tomorrow evening for you? If that doesn't work then lunchtime is good - I have to go to Condor at some point as my helmet finally broke last night (not, I don't think, as a result of me microwaving it. But I'll start a different thread) if that's anywhere near you.0
-
Sorry, Biondino - missed this thread.
You can borrow my commuter rear wheel if you want. It's a CXP 33 fitted with Ultegra
12-25.
If you want, I also have a spare Mavic Open Sport front wheel you can borrow.
Do you want to borrow a spare front light too?
And how are you doing for tools and water bottles/cages?FCN 2-4.

"Exactly."0 -
Thanks Chris! Since Brun has kindly brought his wheel in for me I'll borrow that - makes most sense. Front light I have; I have one bottle cage and a 750ml bottle which I think will be enough as I'll be very sensible about drinking before and after each stint. My front wheel is fine - utterly true despite a year's commuting.
If there's anything I suddenly realise I'm missing I promise I'll get in touch!
Thanks again everyone.0 -
No probs.
Check your light batteries, and take spares.FCN 2-4.

Nuun Flavours wot I have tried:
Kona Cola = great
Lemon/Citrus both palatable if indistinguishable
Orange = orangey!
Orange and ginger = still quite orangey but with a subtle hint of ginger, mmmm
Banananuun = surprisingly pleasant (I normally hate banananana flavoured stuff)
Oh and BTW @ Jash, you left two Cola flavoured tabs at mine on the Dragon, afraid I've drunk them but will replace for you next time."Impressive break"

biondino wrote:As you may know I'm taking part in a 24 hour relay ride (I'm not calling it a race ) for charity in a fortnight. I'm moderately fit in a commute-y sort of way, and go on longer (40-70 mile) rides whenever I can, which hasn't been at all often lately.
During the relay, I will be riding approx 120 miles in approx 6 hours on an essentially flat course (Dunsfold Airfield, where Top Gear is filmed). I've never done over 70 miles in a day before, though that's fairly comfortable. I expect to be doing 1 to 1.5 hours stints, including during the middle of the night. We're not going to be competing with the elite, but I'd still like to do a good job.
So - what should I do to prepare? In particular, is there a point at which I should stop riding to work? Or make myself pootle? What about carb loading or other nutritional tips before, during and after?
And my bike? Clothes? I bought some quality bib shorts which on short rides look like they'll do the job - should I take a spare pair or two in case of chafing?
And any other tips I've forgotten! Thanks loads in advance, and if you're inspired to donate I would be hugely grateful - the link is in my sig.
Anything else you've forgotten? To train properly?0 -
Well I never intended to train properly It'll be interesting to see how I feel when I begin hour 5 - probably not too thrilled, tbh, but I should at least be able to get round the track a few times.0
-
Just hope JC doesn't turn up wanting to testdrive something... I'd love to see his face, the race track teeming with lycra'd up roadies.

I bought some Clif Shot Bloks and some Powerade Ride Shots at Condor earlier - the latter are delicious and the former (which claim to be electrolyte replacers rather than energy sweets) are really a bit odd.0
