OK, I have done a search but I havent found a straight answer. I am unclear about rapid rise shifters & deraillers & high/low normal? I do not understand this or whether it affects me!

I have a shimano XT rear derailler (I don't know exactly which one) & LX front derailler & at the moment I have Deore shifters.

Will I be OK buying these: ?

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... fters.html

as in will they be compatible & work with my front & rear derailler?

Also do I need to get some special lube or grease for the XTR cables?

Last question! Is it a straight forward job to install these shifters?

    shifter will be fine
    I don't lube my cables
I've not installed XTR but XT are easy enough and I suppose these are similar

Rapid Rise (or low normal) is the name given to the style of deurallier where it moves towards the larger cogs as the cable is released
High Normal (which is the traditional one) moves the other way.
    Both use the same shifters
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Did a similar upgrade on one of my bikes a couple of months back. I think XTR outers are pre-greased, if not I wouldn't really bother but some people do. I didn't change my outers so was just a case of mounting the new pod, pulling the new inner through and re-indexing (20 minute job). I'd check first if the outers Merlin supply are XTR ones and if they're pre-cut or not. If they are pre-cut and your bike runs a continuous outer then they're not going to be much good to you. If they're not pre-cut make sure you have some good quality cable cutters (like Park or Shimano) otherwise you can mess up the outers.

Well the XTR is a nicer action for sure (than the deore level ones the bike came with), I only changed as I wanted to be able to multi-shift though, can't say it makes changes any crisper as the rear mech is staying the same and my existing cables were almost new.

As said you can multi shift with xtr which makes them great and so long as you have 9 speed you'll be fine.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

    OK cheers for the tips!

Fair play to Merlin. I ordered them Fri afternoon & they came Sat afternoon & I fitted them in the afternoon.

SHifting seems fairly similar to my deore ones but I havent given the bike a proper good ride yet :P
