Bloody Mavic. The stupid lock nut on my Mavic crossrides (cassette side) has broken. It's not like a normal lock nut either, it has what can only be described as built-in spacers on either side. one of these spacers has broken, it's the one that fits into the drop-out to prevent the thread from screwing away at the dropouts.
After searching for a spare part on the interwebs all night last night and finding nothing, I took the bike into the LBS who said that a replacement needs to be ordered direct from Mavic, who will charge £5 for carriage and are notoriously slow at sending out replacement bits.
What REALLY grinds my gears is that I was offered a mint condition Spesh P2 cromo last week for £250, but decided to spend the money on bling for the existing bike instead.
It really sucks to be out of action due to such a small part.
Even considered buying a new hub just so I didnt have to miss a couple of weeks.

or a cheapo back wheel?Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
yeh, just looking at one on the classifieds now actually. Wonder how long it would take to arrive.0

What type of wheel you after, and how much wonga?0

Anything I can fit a 9sp XT cassette and standard 6 bolt rotor to really. The crossrides have a 19mm internal width and 9 x 135 Rear axle size but the frame will fit a slightly bigger rim I think.
As for price, the cheaper the better really. It's only going to be used as a spare for 2 weeks max.
Just searching fleabay now.0 -
You can get a brand new pair here for 45 quid delivered:

Sell one, keep as spares. Cracking value.0 -
 Wow! That is one cheap wheelset
Nice one Sonic, cheers mate.
Just ordered those, will come in handy as a spare wheelset. Strangely enough, I just received a new Panaracer Fire XC Pro (blue) off WHS this afternoon. If I had known, I would have ordered both at the same time.0 -
Update: Wheels Arrived Yesterday.
Fitted them to bike last night and went out for a quick spin. WELL IMPRESSED!
Obviously, the crossrides are a better wheel, no boubt about it, but for £45 delivered I couldnt be happier with these.
They arrived well packed in a nice big WHS wheel box complete with QR Skewers. They are not the lightest wheels I have ever owned, but they are certainly not the heaviest either. they just feel.....solid, not flimsy like I thought they would.
The hubs roll very well, and rear one is actually nice and quiet when compared to the crossrides.
I have to say, of all the things I have bought for my bike, these are possibly the best buy yet. Once Mavic send me the locking nut I need, these ones will be fitted with a set of slicks and put on the commuter I'm building.
I honestly do reccomend these wheels to anyone who is looking for a cheap wheelset.
supersonic, Thanks very much for spotting these

Also just got off the phone with LBS, apparently Mavic refuse to ship a single lock nut on its own, it is part of an axle assembly and they will only ship the entire assembly and can (or will) not split. Still no clues as to how much that is going to cost though, cant wait to get that invoivce! :roll:0
