The demise of Tchibo

My local Tchibo, in Bognor Regis, is closing down. On enquiry, the staff informed me that the entire UK high street operation was closing due the weakness of the £ against the euro. Tchibo used to sell cheap, but reasonable cycling gear in the style of Aldi and Lidl, but they won't now.

Just another day in entropic Britain... Green Shoots? No, they're weeds!

Tchibo seem to have a shop on every street over here, but I guess they are being hit by Nespresso coffee machines and the like eating into their bean business? Also they only seem to sell female clothing nowadays, I haven't seen cycling kit for a while.

I always thought they were a bizarre, if interesting, anachronism. In London most of their shops were crammed full of curiosities ranging from alarm clocks to lamps to hiking boots to bed linen, oh and cheap cycling gear. All attached to a Starbucks style cafe. Not sure sure who their target market was - people looking for nothing in particular, wandering aimlessly round a shopping centre perhaps? You would be unlikely to ever say - I need a (insert item needed here), I know, lets go to Tchibo!

I've only ever seen a handful of independent (as in Tchibo shop in it's own right) Tchibo stores, but I have seen Tchibo available in other places. I think Somerfield used to stock Tchibo stuff, maybe still do.

I tend to agree with HH though, not quite sure what their purpose is!

The Tchibo in our local Sainsburys has shut down now, so presumably it's the whole lot.
