Other cyclists

Got to a traffic queue around the same time as 2 other cyclists this morning. The one in front of me hopped straight on the pavement. I filtered along the right of the traffic until near the front and cut across to left to turn left at the junction. As I got to the junction the cyclist behind went past on the pavement.
Once joined the mainroad went I straight past both of them so what did they gain? There were lots of pedestrians on the pavement so it won't have been easy riding there anyway?

On another note thought I was gonna get to overtake someone last night but they wimped out and walked instead. For those that know Southampton I have to go up Athelstan Road on my way home which is a tad steep near the end (when I first started commuting I couldn't get up it but was determined I would). The guy infront didn't even try it! Hopefully he will be shamed enough to try it in future having been overtaken by a girl on a bike with 2 paniers. Actually had a really nice driver on that hill too who realised all my looking over my shoulder meant I wanted to turn right at the roundabout at the top (I can't indicate whilst standing climbing - can anyone?) and actually slowed enough to let me over, thank you :)

The one time I cycled in Southampton I hated it - majority of drivers seemed unused to coping with cyclists on the road. I experienced car after car passing dangerously close. The driver who gave you space on the hill was probably an out-of-towner

Henry, I'm with you on that one. In heavy traffic I'm a car enviously watching other 'safe' cyclists filter with ease.

    One day.....................

Filtering in HK is probably a whole different level to filtering in London or Southampton!

Most other people are idiots, therefore, most other cyclists are idiots. QED.

It gets pretty hairy here from time to time. I could have wiped my elbow across the windscreen of a car yesterday morning the car was THAT close. Luckily the woman driving didnt cut back in and held a stable trajectory.

A fair few drivers here have said cyclists "should be on the pavement", and I'm sure the elderly and parents of small children would appreciate that. The best drivers here imo are the HGV guys and on the busses (despite what people say about First in southampton).

BTW, welcome to a fellow Southamptonian! :) Kudos to the hill climb. I chose Garfield/Chessel myself, but I prolly head a different way after I get to the top. :)

Having seen some of your youtube video's you have gone near enough past my house on at least one of your routes! I'm still learning my way round Southampton really as from MK originally so need to get out and find some nice routes around the place. Really enjoying the cycling even with Southampton drivers.

My sympathy. Can we have our football team back please? (actually I don't want it back as we're only 2 divisions below you now and have enjoyed 4 promotions in 7 seasons - COME ON YOU DONS)

I've been filming a couple of cycle-routes like a hamble c'path to put on youtube. It will be like Google street, LOL!! Only worse, haha!

Theres a guy on the council who knows a LOT about routes (if he's still there) so if you're unsure if its right to ride on a particular "cyclepath" (some are not properly signposted locally), etc..

There is also the local campaign, though I'm not a member myself. I think theres a regional CTC councillour too, he's on the CTC website somewhere, lol! I've lost the link tbh.

Also the good cycle shops are Cycleworld (thornhill), GA Cycles (shirley road).. and further out to Parkgate area theres Peter Hansford's shop.
