Hmm...on my way home last night. I set off from a green light with a 4x4 behind me. 2 seconds later I grind to a halt. Turn around, and the Land Rover had decided to drive over my rear wheel.

Luckily didn't come off, but the frame is bent. I got witnesses and he refused to give me his insurance details or name. His only reply to me was "there are too many cyclists on the road" Time to go to the cop shop later to report him, I plan to get the cost of my bike + my cost of commuting in the time without bike.

Bike looks like a write off! Annoyed, but at least I am fine.

You should have called the police there and then. Its a crimial offence for him to not give you his details after an accident.

    Hope the car is registered!

He is of course quite right, we'd all be better off if we stopped cycling and bought more cars.

Glad you had alucky escape, take him for all you can, that might learn 'im!

He tried to drive off but myself and a fellow cyclist stopped him (I planted my bike and my bag in front of his car)

I'm going to the cop shop in 20 mins or so

Edit: I was so upset this morning looking out the bus window to see London Tour de France style, I really wanted to be part of it

+1 and I hope that they throw the book at him. I can't believe that he tried to drive off!

He does have 24 hours to give his details. You do not need to at the scene of the accident. As long as you have his number plate, you'll be fine.

He won't be if he doesn't get in touch... I had the police phone the guy and explain to him how it would be in his best interest to give details when something similar happened to me (rear-ended by an arrogant pr*ck in a 4x4) He did

Just went to the police station on Bishopsgate opposite my work.

"Is this for insurance purposes only?" Ticked NO!

Guy at the police station said it wasn't wise of the man not to give his details...spoke to insurance now and they fully support me too.

    That is NOT TRUE

You must exchange details at the scene ( driver of motor vehicle that is, not cyclist). If you can't do it at the scene then you must report it as soon as possible and in any event within 24 hours.

Reporting it 6 hours later may be an offence, if you could have exchanged details at the scene OR you could have reported it earlier

What an absolute **** , I've started carry my abus u-lock everywhere to deal with individuals like this.

I also would have taken as many photographs of his vehicle and (discreetly) of him as possible.

They need to be removed from the road, or the gene pool, whichever is most cost effective.

I will be able to have 2 bikes out of it, I have enough parts to rebuild it, and insurance have more or less said I will need a new bike (the rear of the frame is bent, it looks like the force of the "tractor" bent the rear mounting area as well as the wheel)

The biggest annoyance of all? Not being on the bloody road :(

I bet he is uninsured. You just need to hope that his car is correctly registered to his real address, or else you'll never get anything back.

that's not necessarily true - there is general insurance cover for uninsured drivers, made particularly accessible if you happen to have the number plate.

Yes, the Motor Insurers Bureau deals with claims from accidents with uninsured or untraced drivers - they paid me £4000 a few years ago.

A taxi did this to me a while back. He was straddling the ASL and I had nipped in in front. When the lights went green, I moved away slowly, he just drove into the back of me. I was able to get off the bike, with it just stood there, half the back wheel eaten by the taxi. Phoned the Police, who wouldn't attend unless someone was injured.

Unfortunately it all got a bit heated and I thought I'd better get out of there before something stupid was done, by me

Alas it cost me a wheel, but I promised myself not to get too crried away with insults in future...

I feel for your predicament, I hate to be without my bike. Heres hoping you're back on the road soon...
