46t big ring?

I've got the standard 44t big ring on my Specialized Epic but find I could occasionally use a slightly bigger gear (maybe a 46t?) on flat sections with a tailwind. Does anyone else find this too? Thinking of entering a few races, so think a bigger top gear might be handy for firetrack bits etc.
I just read the Trek Top Fuel review and see that it only has a 42t big ring. Should racers just be spinning a bit faster?!

Spinning a 42/11 gear at 120 rpm should give you a speed of about 36mph on the flat.0

Hmm, when you put it like that, maybe I just need to spin a bit faster!0
