  • I did this recently, it's a simple enough job.

I set the angle of the bars first, use a torque wrench if you have one for the stem, then put the levers on, but do make sure you're happy with the placement of the levers before you put your bar tape on!

I taped up the brake and gear cables using electrical tape to stop them moving, added an extra layer of bar tape under the pressure points and then wrapped the bar tape over that.

Cinelli Gel tape is really good, and it's easy to reposition if needs be as it's not sticky.

http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=71 has a good section on wrapping bar tape.

I find putting the levers onto the bars off the bike first the best way. It helps you ensure you have put both the levers on in the same place

Top tip for the levers: Set one in position, then use a spirit level to make sure they're the same height.

    Thanks for these tips.

Can I use the old bar tape?
