I have an old Saracen Rufftrax which I am told is an OK entry level XC
except the bouncy bits on the front forks are only shockingly crap and not shocks at all
If i just wanted some cheep alternatives that actually worked (remebering the bike they are going on) what would you sergest?
I mainly ride road but i have this old bike and i quite fancy a ride around some of the local woods and hills
or should i just stick with these chilli shocks, as new ones would just be the first rung on the ladder to spending more money??

Do you know what sort of headset you have ie threaded, aheadset, and the size? Also do you require canti mounts for the brakes?0
-
1 1/4 threaded
and yes canti mounts
it has a converter that allowes me to use an A head stem and im not afraid to knock out the cups and go treadless if it helps but i was told there is no real advantage?0 -
Well, threadless is much lighter and generally has better bearings. Also stiffer.
1 1/4 is a rare size, not many forks now have that.0 -
Sorry My misake i ment 1 1/8
dont know what i was thinking about
and im not to worried about weight as the bike is not great0 -
I think it would be worth upgrading the headset at the same time, as they are cheap and will open up loads more forks. V brakes rather than cantis? What budget are we looking at?0
-
Budgets a tricky one, Its not that the cash is not there it's just I would rather be spending it on my road bike
the MTB is a 2001 saracen and good forks would probably cost more that the whole bike
All i want really is some cheep crud off ebay that you guys would probably see as old hat
the only reason i want to change is that the original ones dont work they are designed to look like shocks thats about the extent of it0 -

Is it possible to just change the internals of the chilli shocks????0
-
Ooh, I've a feeling that's the same model as my brother's bike, it has the chili works forks ... Has it got a massive oversized steel frame? His forks weren't very good when they were new, but they are just knackered now, I've no idea what's inside them but it rides exactly like someone removed the springs.Uncompromising extremist0

Yep thats the one
they are so bad I'm considering rigid0 -
You can't upgrade the internals. They real are a terrible fork!0
