Walking vs. cycling - distance

What do you think a mile per mile comparison is?
E.g., 1 mile walking = 5 miles cycling or whatever. I'm talking about effort expended.
Thoughts?

According to the mighty interweb, walking at a good pace - 3mph - expends 82 kcal per mile. And cycling at a fast pace - 15mph - expends 47 kcal per mile. This is all if you're 155lb.
It seems to me that walking a mile would be harder work than cycling a mile, so this kind of makes sense... but all calorie burning numbers are very approximate.0 -

Hmmm....but Is cycling into a headwind harder than walking into one?0

Try "walking" into a headwind at even 8mph...
The BBC URL will actually work (no apostrophes)
Naismith's Rule suggests an hour for three miles (it includes rests).
This is actually "fast", although I used to do better in the hills.
Cycling into a headwind at 3mph?
I am not sure my granny ring is low enough for that0 -

IMHO...
It could only be harder if you measure in 'effort per hour'. If you measure in 'effort per mile' it would have to be a helluva headwind to beat cycling, surely?FCN 7: Dawes Galaxy Ultra 2012 - sofa-like comfort to eat up the miles

I'm not convinced.....if your cycling into a 10mph headwind at a speed of 10mph, then the windspeed acting on you is 20mph, and obv. walking at 3mph it'd be 13mph.
But then again whenever I walk to work I arrive a hell of a lot more knackered than if I'd cycled, wind or no wind...... and thats to mention the crotch rash0
