yes I have fallen prey to the road bike thing.
My Trek flat bar is lovely and will be my serious commuting bike and I have a good expensive road bike on permanent loan for when I go out with the good commander and the other guys. But I am looking into getting a cheap road bike of my own for weekends in and around Exeter.
Any suggestions? I really am only look at £300 at the most at the moment so it won't be anything fancy, so what is out and about there for that price?

I was in the same situation a few years ago. I got myself a claud butler san remo which you could get brand new for about £300. I've been really happy with it and have only started getting upgrade-fever after riding my cousins £3k+ ti bike.
Alternatively, I think a lot of people would suggest looking at the 2nd hand market. If you know what you're looking for (which I didn't) you could probably get yourself a bargain.0 -
CP had an article in last month's issue re: entry level bikes which was quite interesting.
Personally I wouldn't bother with anything equipped with less than Sora, and my advice would be to aim to save another £300 and then hit the "end of season" sales when the '10 bikes start trickling in. That way you'll get something pretty decent.
Another good alternative is to judiciously eBay for a nice secondhand bike - but do your research and make sure you get the right size.David

If you can stomach Halfords, there is the Carrera Virtuoso which got a good review on these pages, tad more than £300:

Get yourself over to the Forum marked Road Classified
Post a thread explaining what you want, where you're at and how much you got.
Could get a bargain as free to list and no ebay fees
Worked for me.
